I'd pay good money to hear Laura say the word "homeboy".

LOL! I was thinking the same thing when I read the article (yes, some people do read the articles before posting).

It depends on the job you are appying for. It also depends what kind of tattoo it is and where it is also. I have finished the application process for a police department and i am on the waiting list to be hired. I was asked numerous times during the process if i have tattoos. They did not judge you on wheter you had one or not, they wanted ot know where it was and what it was (make sure it wasnt a gang symbol or if it wasnt in a visible place while wearing a uniform). As i said before, it depends on the job you are applying for. Word to the wise, if you get a tattoo, get it in a spot that is concealed while wearing clothing if you plan to go into a line of work that may question it.

Plus it's the only company I know of that gives a full week off for Festivus.

It only hurts if the prospective employer thinks or knows its a gang tatoo.

One of my friends almost lost his shot at a job because he had a large tatoo on his arm with a skull that had a dagger going through it and the words "death before dishonor".

The guy interviewing him was very uncomfortable and was leaning against him, when my friend finally explained what the tatoo was from and why he had it.

At that point, an apology was made and my buddy got the job.

It is one scary tatoo though.

"First lady Laura Bush said on Tuesday that young people are more likely to get jobs if they avoid tattoos"

Ditto for nose, tongue, eyebrow, and all other visible piercings; frosted hair on men that sticks straight upward; slovenly habits and jive-like attitudes; etc.

Ted Kennedy and his ilk can pass all the job protection laws they want but no one (except Starbucks) will hire people whose appearance conveys a poor work attitude, or a selfish "What does my company do for me?" attitude.

This is not a new problem, but a different flavor on an old problem. Remember that the basis for IBM's ("Big Blue") dress code (blue pinstriped suits) was to de-emphasize a person's individualness while on the job. It's not new knowledge that the best employees are the ones who aren't trying to push the boundaries while working.

"so now the left will call her racially and culturally insensitive"

I've often wondered just how many visibly tattoo'd/pierced employees Mr. Lewis of Progressive Insurance has hired, or Soros, or any of the other big-buck Lib/Dem donors.

Absolutely.

The First Lady points out something which should be patently obvious -- but for some bizarre reason there really is a question mark in the original headline!

We are living in the age of insanity.

Yeah, but she was talking gang tattoos. I interviewed a young man once who was straight out of jail and had a visible Houston gang tattoo. He freely admitted he had been in jail. There were all kinds of rules about what we could not ask, but there was something about him that made me want to give him a chance. I had to go through home office to get approval - told him straight up not to burn me. The last I heard, his supervisors were full of praise for his work and he had been promoted twice.
PS: I did ask him before he left my office why he had been in jail and he answered possession of illegal firearms. uh.

"Well, if you're tattooed on your face or your arms ... where people can see it ... most employers probably would not hire you," Bush said

Well duh..I know I wouldn't hire someone like that (unless it was s single military tattoo :)
