There may be 290,000 guardsmen here, but they are only going to send 6,000 to the border and they are only going to do their training there. They will only assist in administrative duties and will not really be ON the border.

As for the wall, Bush has never supported a wall until recently and then it is only for 360 miles, mostly for the built up areas.

Bush is weak on immigration, does not enforce the current laws and has allowed the situation to worsen during his watch. These are facts. The fact is he wants the ILLEGALS to have amnesty, and he is doing everything he can to make it happen. He is pandering now, with his fake sending of the guard to the border and claiming he wants a Wall.

If he was really serious about supporting our immigration laws he would not support catch and release. The pres has the authortiy to force ICE and INS to actually catch and deport prisoners, but of course he gives orders contrary to that.

Only someone who wants to blind themselves to any mistake he makes would think he is for border enforcement.

Professional journalist. In my life I have seen this profession fall from one of prominance to one of public disdain.

#1. Why aren't the Governors calling up National Guardsmen? They don't want them to control the borders even now, most of them.

#2. I linked articles which prove that the president has talked about and FUNDED a wall. Two years ago.

#3. This president DID end catch and release.

Actually, it's a complex and clever Rovian/Bushian plot. President Bush has wanted border reform for years. But, if he were to come out and actually SAY he wanted to seal the border, the liberals would come unglued, and his own party would be afraid to publicly back him. As usual.

So, Rove and Bush organized a plan to "reform" immigration. The plan would grant "amnesty" to 11 million illegals already here, and let about 100 million more illegals in over a few years. It would grant SS benefits to illegals even if they committed numerous fraudulent acts in the past. And it would let illegals who only had one felony or three misdemeanors stay. The plan - worked!

A huge outcry was heard throughout the land, and immigration reform was stopped. President Bush and Karl Rove got what they wanted. Work was started to seal the border and militarize it. The flow of illegals was slowed. His base started throwing out "moderate" Republicans. Even liberal Democrats started going along with the measures to stop immigration.

"I love it when a plan comes together" chuckled Rove. "Good job turd blossom" said President Bush. And away they drove in the stretched black limo, each with a big cigar and a shot of Jack Daniels. God bless America!

"illegal aliens—a term that makes it sound as if the country were being invaded by Martians."

New ideas? He stole this lame line from McCain. I guess he must be writing to the magazine's Dem base. The Republicans had already heard that when McCain said it first.

Lately I have noticed that several itemsI have purchased have had multiple sets of instructions in them to accomodate the spanish speaking influx.
In fact, over half of the product's package is wasted on foreign language accomodation.
This is a small example of how costly this invasion is becoming. We have made it too easy for those illegals to succeed in America, including non enforcement of long standing laws regarding entry and citizenship.

We must force congress, especially the Senate to observe the laws of the land and quit pandering to big business as a clearinghouse for cheap labor.

And we have to quit supporting the business who exploit the cheap labor pool created by illegal, undocumented workers.

It's amnesty MB... and if anything resembling the Senate bill gets through the House, it'll be a poison-pill for the Republican party.

And the president has said he supports Sensenbrenner's bill.

A recent immigration reform bill passed by the House in December is drawing sharp criticism for its provision mandating the construction of a fence along the nearly 2,000 mile U.S.-Mexican border. President Bush has spoken in favor of the bill authored by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.), known as the Border Protection, Antiterrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005. Bush has already signed legislation appropriating more than $70 million to install new barriers and improve existing protective infrastructure along the border. This includes fencing as well as vehicle barriers and lighting to enhance border security.

Who out there believes that an American who wishes to defend his country from foreign invasion is not a patriot but is a racist and a bigot?

I'll tell you who that is; it is a traitor.

80% of Americans oppose amnesty.

But nearly that same percentage support a path to earned citizenship. I would say the typical American is a little psychoid on illegal immigration issues.

If after conference, the House gets more enforcement added to the final bill, elimination of the Social Security contribution on illegal earnings but the Senate is able to retain a path to earned citizenship for those who are currently here the Republicans would be foolish to let the entire bill die. Democrat challengers will rightly attack their Republican imcumbents as weak on border enforcement and they would be right. Enhanced border security with earned citizenship approved by congress is clearly a hell of a lot more border security than you get with no bill...unless you think an additional 6000 National Guardsmen pushing paper, providing intel, and building roads is going to have a real impact when the number of border guards has already been increased that and the number of illegals making it across the border has increased.

If you say wait until next year and get a perfect bill, consider the fact that if there is no bill this year, the House will probably go to the Democrats and any new bill will likely have even less fence and other enforcement provisions.

With their get tough on immigrants stance, Republicans have blown an opportunity to guarantee a GOP majority in perpetuity..

What a bargain.

The GOP could have been presiding in perpetuity over a declining third world nation whereby 60-70 percent of its citizens would be poor, unskilled anarchists attempting to turn the nation into Mexico North.

I'm mostly holding my breath for now.
To see if Dubya will actually sign a "comprehensive immigration bill"
that includes AMNESTY for ILLEGALS that committed IDENTITY THEFT...
a crime that would land any legal resident or citizen into the slammer.

Bush recently authorized the completion of a 14-mile fence and concrete barrier along the border near San Diego.

The Prez. never supported a wall on the entire border, or even a large portion.

He simply funded $70 million to complete a previously authorized wall near San Diego.

....or as long as this country lasts with a couple hundred million indigents coming across the border. Your mileage may vary.

You obviously aren't up to date on the proper terminology. Take the term "illegal alien", for example. How can a human being be illegal? How can a resident of planet earth be an alien?

I hearby sentence you to sensitivity training, where you'll learn that borders are just imaginary lines on a map, that Latin Americans are Americans, too, and that the sheer accident of being born in a country doesn't give you any more right to be there than the billions who weren't born there, who outnumber and therefore outvote you.
