ACLU Condemns Voter Integrity Act
Stop The ACLU ^ | 20-Sep-06 | John Stephenson

Via The ACLU Website:

The American Civil Liberties Union today expressed its disappointment with the House passage of a bill placing undue and unnecessary burdens on Americans’ fundamental right to vote. H.R. 4844, the "Federal Election Integrity Act of 2006," requires voters to present a government-issued photo ID in order to vote in federal elections. In addition, beginning in 2010 voters would be required to present a photo ID that was issued based on proof of citizenship in order to vote. The measure passed by a vote of 228-196.

The following can be attributed to Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office:

"Less than two months after the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, the House of Representatives has chosen to pass legislation disenfranchising the very citizens the VRA was designed to protect. No eligible citizen should have to pay to vote. There are voters who simply don’t have photo ID and requiring them to purchase one in order to vote would be tantamount to a poll tax. This measure will disproportionately impact racial and ethnic minority voters, senior citizens, voters with disabilities, and others who do not have photo identification nor the financial means to acquire it."

Give me a break! You have got to be kidding! Perhaps they are worried this act will supress "millions" of illegals and dead people from voting! An I.D. is required in many of the most basic things in America such as driving a car or even cashing a check. Please, tell me how all of these poor people that can not afford to get an I.D. cash their welfare checks?

OK, let me get this straight. We can require people to register to vote but cannot require them to prove they are who they claim they are?

The US House bill requires states to provide free ids to those who cannot afford them. I suppose next the Democrats will argue that registering is too difficult for the poor and we should do away with that as well!

How come it's OK to require a photo ID to fly but not to vote? Hmmmmmmmmmmm?

Yes, it even provides for free I.D.'s and they still cry "poll tax". Isn't it ridiculous? If you read the entire post at STACLU it is quite revealing.

What I dont understand is voting is a fundamental right with no restrictions.

Shouldn't gun ownership be the same thing.

Or if we can put restrictions on gun ownership cant we do the same to voting.

Eventually, the ACLU will complain that people having to drive to a polling place is an undue burden. Then when the government offers rides, they will claim that the open poll hours are too restrictive.

On our November ballot there will be a question which if passed will allow convenience stores to sell beer and wine. You can't be asked to show an ID to vote for this, but you'll have to show an ID to buy the beer and wine.

"undue and unnecessary burdens"

Try renting a video, cashing a check or even signing up for a library card without picture ID. This is the "burden" we would like to ask for when voting. The reason for asking is the past fraud of the dead or illegals or felons voting time and time again. My legal vote can be cancelled by a vote cast by fraud.

This "Voter ID" bill, would require voters in federal elections to provide picture identification by 2008 and provide proof of U.S. citizenship by 2010.

It was among the recommendations made last year by the bipartisan Commission on Federal Election Reform, headed by former President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, and former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, a Republican.

Every one in this country has photo ID. It can't take more than a couple of bucks to get one. They're kidding, right?

Absolutely. If the U.S. were to actually have a valid, legit election, the democrats would barely exist. They know it, and that's why they're fighting tooth and nail to keep their voting scams hidden. This bill terrifies them!
The feds caught a whole boat load of democrats voting with mutable absentee ballots in N.Y. and Florida in 2004. Those are just the ones they caught!
They didn't check the country for the illegal alien votes in 2004, either. There are 12,000,000 living off our tax dollars right now that would love to vote democrat for more free handouts.

On one hand, the right to vote is probably one of the most fundamental and important rights that we have in America. So, I can understand any reluctance to restrict access to the ballot box. However, all these voting ID laws do is protect our voting rights. They insure that each person voting is eligible, and our votes are not tainted by those who are not eligible to vote.

In my mind, every attempt to prevent the Voter ID laws, is a way of preserving the opportunity for fraud.
