Night Of The Lott Long Knives? (Lott and the "problem" of talk radio)
www.HughHewitt.com ^ | 6/15/07 | Hugh Hewitt

Geez, Senator Lott is really unhappy with "talk radio" and some of his colleagues:

The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”

At some point, Mr. Lott said, Senate Republican leaders may try to rein in “younger guys who are huffing and puffing against the bill.”

I think that this is a complaint that the old days were more fun for senators, and that the senators especially don't like the new media's ability to inform, inspire and direct public opinion. The end result of Senator Lott's blasts (another one here) is to of course further motivate the base because to the reality of a bad bill and past insults is now added a genuine note of dislike --which is not the way to build a party.

It may be that the Times and the Post cherry picked Lott's comments, but Senators McConnell and Kyl have got to take him aside and explain that the base is our friend, that new media isn't going away and that they don't want it to --unless, of course, the GOP would like to leave all media to the left.

This is very shocking, esp. coming from a Republican.

Apparently they are as comfortable in authoritarian clothes as the dems.

Wait until they attack the internet. The internet is the real enemy of corrupt politicians.

He shows up on 'Spitball' quite a bit... going along with Matthews' spew and making an ass of himself... and especially... his party. If he was a 'wise-guy'... he would've taken two-in-the-hat long ago.

Here’s what my senator said:

“We should not reward those who break our immigration laws. We should continue to hire more border agents and install the fencing and technology to close the gaps along our land borders. We should encourage employers to hire American citizens and target those companies that hire illegal immigrants,” ... “And we should not give a blanket amnesty to illegal immigrants who want to flaunt the laws of this land.”...”This proposal could wave a magic wand and give as many as 12 million illegal immigrants automatic legal status. This amnesty plan is no fairy tale; it is a bad dream,” ... “The proposal is a slap in the face to every immigrant who had to wait abroad to come to American shores, and to every immigrant who had to struggle and work to become a U.S. citizen.”

Don’t you wish the GOP leadership sounded more like Senator Byrd?

I agree with your point about the MSM not being as dominant.

I must say though, hearing a sitting U.S. Senator so clearly threaten the freedom of speech and dissent as his comment does, is a chilling thing.

"Does anyone think it's possible Lott might actually support the Fairness Doctrine in order to "deal with the problem" of talk radio?"

Of course he will. Lott sold his soul to become "respectable" in the clubby senate. The only republicans he's listening to now are the ones that want the ultra-cheap labor from Mexico.

I used to think tarring and feathering was an antiquated, silly, anachronistic practice. Virtually every day now, I grow more and more to see how practical a gesture it really was, and how much we’ve lost since we abandoned its practice.

**************

A better question would be "Does anyone think Lott doesn't support the Fairness Doctrine in order to "deal with the problem" of talk radio?"

Fewer responses would be needed.

The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”

Yeah, how dare common people voice their own opinions when they run counter to what Trent Lott wants?

Is this creep really back in a position of power?

We have a saying here in Mississippi, ‘talking underneath their clothes’, other words, talking bad about someone and yes, WE are talking ‘underneath his clothes’ too. Of only a good republican here would run against him but no one will.

Not to mention more serious measures, such as public horse-whipping and, er, ‘piking’.

It is starting to sound more and more like we should all read the Bill of Rights or re-read it if you haven’t already.

Wow. The Fairness Doctrine would destroy the Republican Party faster than the McAmnesty bill would.

These guys are suicidally stupid.

Well, the nice thing about the Fairness Doctrine is that it means whatever the Powers that Be say it means. Like McCain-Feingold, it’s yet another prop for incumbents.

Damn....how bad has it become when Robert Byrd sounds more Republican than our own Republicans????
