GARDEN GROVE, Calif. A tagger etched the characters "B1R" with a sharp tool on 11 glass and granite surfaces at the Crystal Cathedral, causing about $30,000 in damage to the Garden Grove landmark, officials said Tuesday.
Police were called to the cathedral at 12141 Lewis St. Monday to investigate defaced areas including glass walls of the original chapel and prayer room, granite areas of floors and the memorial wall, said Garden Grove police Lt. Travis Whitman.
Police said the damage occurred sometime between Friday and Saturday nights, Whitman said.
The damage consists of the etched characters B1R, and initial investigation indicates that it is the work of an individual tagger or an unidentified tagging crew, Whitman said.
Police are not calling it a gang crime, he said.
The attack took place sometime after a community outreach program on the church campus, said Crystal Cathedral spokesman Mike Nason.
The man, estimated to be in his 20s, used a sharp object to inflict the scratches. Other damaged areas include the Family Life Center, an area near the Crystal Cathedral glass spire and at the arboretum, Nason said.
Nason said police do not recognize the suspect by the tag scratched into the surfaces, and detectives are still investigating.
Church officials released security camera footage of the suspect in the hopes that someone will recognize him.
Standing in front of one tag, Nason said, "We're obviously seeing someone that has their own particular tag."
The video shows an individual, wearing a dark jacket and lighter pants, lurking around walls, and one shot shows him turning his back and etching the glass while looking about furtively.
"We've got several large plate glass windows in the arboretum (that) there's only one glass manufacturer in the United States that still makes it because the building is so old," Nason said. "And those are probably 10 (feet) by 10 (feet) and those will have to be replaced by three or four."
"The black marble, the granite, rather, will have to be replaced," Nason said. "The names of the people on the Memorial Garden will have to be re-named."
"Anybody who does this kind of thing is lost and needs to be found," Nason told Channel 9.
A woman working inside a building where some damage was inflicted also saw the tagger and provided a description. The tagger "looked through a window" and was seen by the woman inside, but he could not see her, Nason said.
It could cost $30,000 to replace the surfaces that were damaged, officials said.
Anyone with information on the suspect can call Officer Charles Danieley at (714) 741-5849.
“B1R” means “boner”
When they catch him, I hope they charge him for the full $30K.
Hmmm, I wonder if this act of vandalism against a religious facility will get the same attention as that swastika-in-a-cornfield received? I’ll just have to watch the news and monitor the net to find out, I guess.
Part of me wonders if what Martin Luther did to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517would have been considered tagging or vandalism today?
This is rude
Neither.
The Reverend Robert ( Top Shark } Schuler will turn this into a cash cow by raising 10 million dollars to repair the damage.
If the tagger had scratched the text of 95 Theses..., or a modern equivalent on the glass & granite, you might have a point.
"B1R" is just plain vandalism.
Notice anything different?
probably not...
Hey, what’s with the sarcasm? (lol) If there’s any cash left over maybe the Schuler family beach homes could use a little sprucing up...
Which do you think will have a tougher sentence imposed? The recent vandal or Martin Luther?
Of course, they're not about to tell the public what this description is. The tagger might actually get caught.
Huh?
Seems like it would spell "Bunner", or maybe "Bwunner".
Kids these days - they can't even spell correctly.
Note the B-1 is called “the bone”
Work it out.
The local news provided a description....a hooded sweatshirt covered most of his face.
Does anybody know where Michael Newdow was at that time?
Work it out.
My point is that phonetically speaking [i.e. if one were literate], "The B-1" should be pronounced "The Bun" [or "The Bwun"].
Not "The Bone".
Whew. At least it wasn't B1 Bob er Robert [Robert Dornan].
