THE SINS OF THEIR FATHERS Tanya Gold talks to the descendants of Nazis who have embraced Judaism

Today, he believes Germany is doomed. "People there don't get married, and if they do they have one child," he says. "But the Turks and the other foreigners have many children. So it is a question of time that Germany will no longer be German." Why does he think this has happened? "I think it is a punishment for the Holocaust," he says, matter-of-factly. "Germany will leave the stage of history, no doubt about it." But the Jews, by contrast, will never die. This is a neat irony of history that he loves. "All the great cultures have left the stage of history," he says. "The Romans, the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Babylonians. But this little people, who gave so much to the world, do not." He chuckles. "That is something."

I walk through the Old City, pondering my encounter with this strange, kindly man. Something seems to be missing from his story. To stand in front of a rabbi whose father was in the SS and to hear he became a Jew because he doubted the Trinity is absurd. So I telephone Dan Bar-On, a professor of psychology at Ben Gurion University, and a world expert on the psychology of the children of perpetrators. He tells me, flatly, pitilessly: "The motive of the converts is to join the community of the victims. If you become part of the victim community, you get rid of the burden of being part of the perpetrator community." He interviewed Shear-Yashuv for his book Legacy of Silence. "For me," he says, "Shear-Yashuv represents a person who ran away from the past..."

This is a strange story with some strange characters but worthy of a read. I have read other editorials about Europe's unconscious embrace of nihilism and their urge to go gently into that good night. Also, other character studies of Germans wallowing in the sins of their grandparents. My own family on Dad's side wore gray and served in the Kalmyk cavalry fighting on the Eastern Front. Dad spent his first eleven years under the Nazis but neither he nor I are particularly hung up on it.

Anyone who really knows their WWII history understands moral ambiguity. The Eastern Front especially was a case of bad guys shooting bad guys. Taking on the sins of someone else is supposed to be forbidden in both Judaism and Christianity, is it not? In any case, the same people who love to throw around the "N"-word (in this case "Nazi") don't seem to mind in the least the actions of Hugo, Mahmoud, Fidel & Raul, Vlad, Robert M. and Li'l Kim. Your thoughts, please.

Goodness, this is a bizarre read, you're right. I'm quite surprised that this was never posted to FR, but I suppose that the 2008 campaign was really busy in August when this article was first published.

Here's a link to the text-only cached version at google:

How is the person she found in Israel related to Hitler, as he had no descendants?

An interesting article. I admit from my perspective you accept a convert to Judaism as any other Jew. I presume Christians do the same with Christian converts. Motivational analysis isn't necessary. Perhaps during the conversion process, not after. But interesting none the less

That’s the funny thing. The man isn’t related to them at all. His grandmother married the illegitimate son of Hitler’s dad’s half-brother (from Alois Hitler’s first marriage) AFTER she divorced the man’s grandfather (whew!).

Really, he has no claim to be a relation. He pretty much admits it but seems to love obsessing about it.

I guess he has a bit of an excuse to be cracked. He was a bastard child himself. His mother got knocked up as a teenager and kicked out of the family, supported herself as a clerk/typist for the Wehrmacht and took her frustrations out on him.

I was surprised that some of the “aryan” forums where discussion of this article took place in 2008 actually identified the individual as a “descendant of Hitler” — you’d think that folks concerned about their own “supremacy” would at least know that Adolph didn’t have any descendants; although, of course, there are some nephews of his brother who became U.S.citizens.

One served in the Navy, ours, during the war. All three agreed not to have children. A great personal sacrifice.

There seems to be an entire body of sociological literature about the children of Nazis and I suspect that it arose because for decades none of the former nazis ever told their children exactly what it was that they did during World War II. Wasn't there a televised broadcast of an American documentary film shown in Germany in the 1970s which simply sent ALL people born after 1945, say, into complete emotional shock??

I think that's where all this literature about Germany's children originated, in the reaction to that week of television viewing about an historical period that their parents never discussed with them.

Imagine what it would be like if you had the papparazzi tracking your every move because you were the great great great randnephew of Adolph Hitler.

All three agreed not to have children. A great personal sacrifice. ...................................... The History Channel had a program about Hitler’s relatives in the US. They had kids growing up during the 1960’s. The family name was changed, but they are here. So I guess it was like a Copenhagen agreement?

The Guardian would have some obligatory Israel bashing in it, though. What I’d like is some particulars. The professor with the family connection to Hitler says his sons speak like fascists, but what do they say, exactly? The leftist lesbian lady says she keeps vigil at check-points to make sure the IDF boys and girls respect Pali human rights. So what violations has she noted? It’s innuendo masquerading as fact.
