LPGA golfer Erica Blasberg found dead in Henderson home
Updated: May 11, 2010 4:54 AM EDT

Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- LPGA golfer Erica Blasberg was found dead in her Anthem neighborhood home over the weekend.

Her body was discovered after she failed to leave for a tour Saturday morning as scheduled.

"This is devastating. I mean you don't want to have to bury a 25 year-old daughter. It's sad," says Mel Blasberg, Erica's father.

Before joining the LPGA, Erica was a standout golfer at the University of Arizona. She was named Golfweek's 2003 Player of the Year after finishing the season No. 1 in the rankings.

"Having a daughter like that was really special," says Mel. "She was great in school. The type of person who never gave us any trouble, she was a great child."

He describes Erica as a role model for young golfers.

"She's not immune to the pressures of golf, she's not immune to the pressures of life. She's a 25 year-old girl and they're crazy to begin with." says Mel. "This is a story about how you raise a kid and they came out okay. And now something happened and we have to find out what it is."

This is so sad. I'll call my daughters today and tell them that I love them. They are about her age.

Make sure your kids know that they can always come home.

I always told my kids no matter what they did they were still loved by us but if they smoked I’d have to kill them.

She doesn’t fit the normal LPGA look. Truly a tragedy.

I'm hearing self-inflicted.

Dad's statement makes me think possible suicide

Four short sentences that leave you with the clear idea that there is much more to this story. And it sounds as if the Dad at least has a suspicion about something.

I’m gonna guess suicide from the tone of the article.

Hmmm....I have a 26 year old daughter and she's not crazy even though she works full time and is a 3rd year law student. Had he said 16 - 18 year old, then yeah, crazy.

Sounds like this may not have been a surprise to her family.

“I’m gonna guess suicide from the tone of the article.”

Yes, it sounds that way, and it’s tragic. I knew a young man who did this on the anniversary of the day his father did it. He was smart and handsome and could have had the world by the tail. Horrible. It makes me wonder, how many people on this board have thought about suicide at some point in their lives? Just curious.

From Wikipedia:

Blasberg’s father, Mel Blasberg, was quoted saying, “At first glance it looks like she might have taken her own life, but at second glance, something is very, very strange about it. We’re waiting for the police to make an investigation.”[2]

I agree. Except that no one ever has the world by the tail. There’s always something.

Maybe she was killing herself being “perfect” trying to meet others expectations. Parents need to let their “perfect” children know that they appreciate the level of effort it takes to be that (it doesn’t come naturally to anybody).
