SFC Jack White, an Airborne School instructor, received the Army's second-highest military decoration Sept. 7 in a ceremony at the 173rd Airborne Memorial on the National Infantry Museum grounds. The award is for his actions June 29, 2008, in Khost Province, Afghanistan, while serving as a squad leader with the Vicenza, Italy-based A Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment.
That night, White and 18 other Soldiers on a tiny observation post near the Pakistan border turned back an enemy force of 105 Taliban fighters who attacked from a ridge with small-arms fire, RPK machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.
"I truly believe if he had been killed or there were more wounded, it would be the Medal of Honor. I think he deserves the Medal of Honor, but this will do," said Command Sgt. Maj. Rick Weik, who was the battalion's command sergeant major and now fills that role at the 198th Infantry Brigade. "He brought them all back unscathed ... Very easily this could've turned bad. If it wasn't for his leadership, it would've."
...”I think he deserves the Medal of Honor, but this will do,”
...actually he might have been put in for the MOH and it got knocked back to a DSC...that happens sometimes...not withstanding, this gallant award should insure him an Army career for as long as he chooses....and that’s the way it should be...troops need to serve with real living breathing heros...they need to be around them.
Its a shame if it did get knocked back
BUMP!!!
I’m reading between the lines and what this tells me is that we need more snipers with cameras. The enemy can’t be that well trained. We are better supplied. It would save bullets! Just think of the youtube moments!
They HATE MOH for living recipients. Dead heros never get to have opinions for a few more decades. Dead recipients quickly fade from the public eye.
Politicians (especially those in uniform too) only want to give MOH to dead men. It is losing it’s honest value and turning into a cult by denying it to numerous truly deserving men.
Our leaders only love a veteran when he can be cast as a victim, heros or strong veterans are an anathema to them. And it’s mostly decided by jealous staff types, far from danger.
the posted link does not work. Please re-post. Thanks.
Yep, even Generals have to salute the MOH.
Who is siting platoons in harder-to-defend spots, when several clicks away there is a perfectly useable ridge? Are they using our guys as bait?
Take the hill.
You are correct. Some some reason, the article has been taken down. The article was done by the Ft. Benning PAO and someone at HQ DA may have wanted to make some changes. I expect that it will come back up in a different form shortly. Too, bad, there were lots of pictures of the ceremony, a biography, and the citation.
Meanwhile, here is a local TV station’s article:

I will post again when a better story is published.
I read the article twice. Not once did the author mention just what the award was. Very poorly written.
Yes, most of us with even a modicum of knowledge of the military know he’s talking about the DSC, but if my mother read this article, she wouldn’t have a clue.
That may be why the article was taken down. Either that or someone didn’t get the proper mother may I from Washington. We’ll see what it looks like when it reappears. The original article included pictures of him wearing the award, and the citation identifying the award as a DSC.
As I said earlier, the article has been pulled, but this Ft. Benning Facebook entry is still up, at least for now.
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
The link is working again.
