UC Berkeley freshman Devin Shoop got a $220 ticket in September. His crime: locking his bicycle to a railing instead of a bike rack.
He got another ticket two weeks later: $220 for rolling his bike through a stop sign instead of fully stopping. Now he has to go to traffic school to keep a moving violation off his driver's license.
Jorel Allegro, a junior, earned his $220 ticket in October for coasting through the campus dismount zone instead of walking his bike as required.
California's law requiring the same traffic fines for cars and bikes isn't new. But at UC Berkeley, where campus police have vigorously enforced the laws at a time of unprecedented tuition hikes, students are furious.

I hate it when bikes think they are cars.
Ha Ha...chickens coming home to roost....
Excellent. The Berzerkley’s love government regulation of people’s lives so this should be more than welcome.
It’s for the children!
It will save the planet!
Government knows best!
Wow. California is awful
In some ways, they ARE “cars” — at least from a legal standpoint. These cyclists are required to obey all the rules of the road when they’re on public streets. And it looks like they have a few other laws that only apply to them, too — like the “dismount zones” described here in this article.
The obvious solution is to go to another school instead of Berkeley.
I love it!
He can thank the left-wingers who comprise the Critical Mass cult for his ticket.
What the heck is the big deal? Obey the darn laws and you’ll be $400 richer. Some people think they are above the law and now even Berkley is telling them they are NOT. Who wudda thunk it????
Awesome. Now KaliPornostan has a tool to suck the life savings from their hated “Breeders” through their spawn and drive them from the state.
Moreford will be explaining how wonderful this is in 3,2,1...
These fines should be tripled — CA has a revenue problem! C’mon! Everybody has to suffer!
For years, when I was working in Greenwich village, I made it a habit of looking both ways before crossing in the crosswalk with a green light.
Because there was constant danger from bike riders going the wrong way on one-way streets. Or charging through red lights without even slowing down.
This was especially true of bicicyle messengers, who are paid to deliver important business documents faster than a car could get through traffic.
$220 is a bit stiff for chaining a bike to a railing while visiting someone in the building. But I agree with punishing the moving violations.
Those fines are too dang high but it is not fair that bicyclists get to ignore road rules with impunity.
Make the tickets $50 for everyone, and ticket the bikes when they switch lanes without signaling, go through red lights, etc.
Yeah,
Liberals only like to use OTHER peoples money to pay for their schemes. Once it’s starts hitting THEIR pocketbook....they are all incensed!
Good news. They need the same thing here in Austin.
How can these people possibly have any problem? These bureaucrats are just here to help them. Don’t they understand how much the bureaucrats love them?
As much as I despise petty police action, this article is rather amusing.
Well I don’t like it because a bike was my primary transportation 10+ years ago when I was a teenager. As such I know how to ride on the street and am pretty safe when it comes to cars and pedestrians.
Just another revenue scheme.
exactly. So damn funny.
