In fact, state of the art detection for "clean", weapons-grade PU239 (assuming 6% contamination of PU240) is a couple of miles, at best. And that's unshielded. Add an inch of lead and you're not likely to detect it next door.

Sailors sleep within a few feet of W-88 warheads without harm.

Yes, a Uranium bomb can be "seen" from at least 100 miles. But, for shielded Plutonium, it's virtually undetectable.

There was a rumor that Israel already has that policy, and has told that to all the nations around them. Might have just been a rumor.

The Tiger Woods spitting on the golf course story will have to run its cycle before this has a chance of being picked up by the MSM.

The people would demand that they finally close the border — for real this time — and they don’t want to do that.

They also want to cut military spending, which they couldn’t do if people knew what is really happening out there.

“He said that so much energy travels through Houston to the rest of the US...”

Are you referring to oil ships coming in? Or a power plant?

Rumors like that can hold a power all their own.

“material is not getting across our borders, no way, no how...”

In some Hispanic’s backpack being walked across the border? A 2,000+ mile border is a big place.

Or a small boat coming onto a beach. Lots of shoreline, too.

Heads up investigative reporting or ratings month attention grabber? It’s one or the other but I’m not yet sure which.

Everything that flows through the pipelines that supply the midwest and east coast. I’m guessing natural gas, oil, and refined gas.

Nice pipeline map:

Neither do I, but if I had a choice between a dirty bomb going off in my neighborhood or a real nuke doing the same, there would be no contest.

I’d pick the nuke. I know where I’m going if one of those hits my neighborhood and I’m fine with it. Dirty bomb, not so much, messy awful business that I don’t want to deal with.

There should be an announced policy. The first time a dirty nuke goes off in America, a ‘clean’ nuke goes off in Mecca.

Would you be expecting President Obama to be giving this speech this evening?

Nope, not at all. What I am suggesting, is that a prudent policy would be to cut through all the ambiguity and anounce direct and severe consequences to terrorism. That way, groups that would use terrorism would at least have a little something to fear themselves. Call it reverse terrorism.

Listen, if I were president (as unlikely an event as there has ever been), I would have a wheel in the oval office, sort of like a Wheel of Fortune wheel. On it, would be all of the nations that we regard as terrorist states. My policy would be, if America is hit by a 911 sort of attack, I would spin the wheel and take out retribution on whomever the magic wheel landed on. You can get OFF the wheel if you give us information on whatever wretched groups are operating in your out back. It certainly would be in the best interest of every tin-horn dictator to clue the United State in on these activities, otherwise, who knows, it might be THEM who is being pulled out of a spider hole. I'll never be president, of course, but anyone running is free to use my idea.

personal experience...no nuclear or radioactive material is going to cross our border undetected anywhere at anytime...now dope is another matter..

So there's some special super-secret technology that catches radioactive material, but ignores everything else that flows across our border like a river?

I'm in disbelief, forgive me.

I’ll never understand the neglect of our borders except for political reasons. What’s the point of homeland security when they don’t even protect our borders?

Upfront caveat: what I'm about to type about what I believe is happening should not be taken as an endorsement or approval of it - just explication of what I think is a highly cynical, yet well-masked, rationale.

I think that the US Government's position on border security grows out of the concept that "idle hands are the devil's workshop".

Mexico is a poor country with a sh*tty economy, high birthrate and substantial underclass. The very type of environment leading to a very disillusioned citizenry (especially unemployed young males) that would normally be ripe for revolution.

A revolution in Mexico, on the US's doorstep, is not desirable at all. Especially since it can be expected to bring to power a Leftist/Marxist ideologue in the Hugo Chavez mold.

I think the political powers that be on both sides of the border see illegal immigration from Mexico into the US as a safety valve. Allow the otherwise unemployed (idle hands, remember) underclass into the US where they can largely (yes, there are exceptions) be expected to toil away quietly and anonymously (due to fear of arrest and deportation) at long-hours (idle hands, remember) manual labor jobs that provide basic sustenance and under-the-table economic aid ($ sent to family back home). Thereby avoid revolution because the social demographic most likely to provide the rank/file for that revolution simply aren't there. Because they're over here.

Now, on a related topic ... with such a porous border there's the threat of a Middle Eastern terrorist passing as an Hispanic in order to conduct terrorist operations. It's interesting that in 10 years post-911, there haven't been a lot of instances of such. I'd read an article somewhere a while back suggesting that the deserts of Mexico's Northern border provinces are littered with the bones of hundreds of erstwhile former jihadiis slowly bleaching in the desert Sun. Reason: the Federales and Coyotes know that a real terrorist attack launched from across the border would be bad - VERY bad - for business ... since the US would seriously step up border protection measures. So they collect their crossing payment (they ARE businessmen after all) and then "take care of the problem" where no one will ever find the body. Some interesting food for thought, anyways.

Would be nice if that’s true. Put up neon lights for the islamos, then tank them after collecting the coyote’s fee.

Never say never, there are ways to accomplish anything. Any security system can be bypassed or fooled by the right people. All terrorists need to do is recruit or hire the right people. Not as hard as one thinks.
