Dish Network said on Wednesday it will close all 300 or so retail locations of the Blockbuster video rental chain by January, closing a chapter on a brand that failed to compete in the digital world.
Dish plans to lay off as many as 2,800 employees.
Dish, the second-largest U.S. satellite TV company, bought the failed Blockbuster LLC video rental chain in a bankruptcy auction in 2011 for $320 million, a dramatic fall for a brand that at its peak in 2002 had a market value of $5 billion.

Our neighborhood Blockbuster is still open. However, the 5 Guys hamburger joint across the street was shuttered this past week. Never saw that coming.
Brick & mortar = horse & buggy.
The two 5 guys in my area seem to be doing OK. A few months back a bojangles on a major street that always seemed full was shuttered unexpectedly overnight going into a weekend. It is still vacant.
Be ready to pick up some killer clearance deals.
VHS tapes will be going cheap
I see people renting DVDs from machines in grocery stores here regularly.
I recall BB bought up Erol’s video store chain years ago.
Erol’s was in the VCR age of rental movies.
I remember them putting Macrovision encoding on them to screw up the recording VCR gain on copied versions only, only on newer VCrs per FCC regs.
Hard to compete against Redbox:
-Put an entire DVD/Games store inside a red container the size of a refrigerator.
-Put a red container in every grocery store so that customers have easy access.
-Connect those red containers to the web for easy ordering and browsing from a smart phone.
-Charge less money than Blockbuster.
Adapt or die.
The future is here, on my hard drive
A few years back some people were predicting the demise of Gamestop. Gamestop is doing better than ever though.
How much time of my life did I waste on a Friday night in line at Blockbuster? Just so I could watch the new realized VHS tape.
Too much time, thats for sure.
So, I guess we must say you folks up in Ohio... are late again getting to the party--
Here in Spain... we think it must be something in the Lake Erie water.
Hold on, there, Bendy. It is... a Cleveland thing!
No, Jim, it is a Cincinnati... thing!
Gadzooks, big, I wish I'd never... brought it up!
Yeah, we all know it is a Green Bay... thing--
KFC closed in our town this past month.
“However, the 5 Guys hamburger joint across the street was shuttered this past week. Never saw that coming.”
The 5 Guys corporate people take the franchise very seriously. The requriements for the franchise to continue are pretty steep. If you miss your targets they shut you down. No second chances...
Unfortunately right! Too bad though as I like to occasionally go the these stores for some things needed immediately (or wanted). I can see the hand writing though and b&m will have a hard time surviving.
I guess two or three days delay will have to suffice as I also do not see much of a future for local stores other than groceries.
Sure hope North Korea does not interfere though...sorry, just a thought.
“I see people renting DVDs from machines in grocery stores here regularly.”
Thats because if the following reasons
Its EASY
Its CHEAP
Its CLOSE
Its FAST
and they generally have what you want.
Wasn't Steve Berrard his CFO at Blockbuster?
