America Needs a King
Politico ^ | January 2, 2014 | Michael Auslin

Does America need a monarch? Ever since, according to legend, George Washington turned down the chance of becoming the new country’s king, America’s identity as a republican nation of citizen rulers has been rock solid. Indeed, nothing can stir patriotic anger more than the suggestion that the U.S. president is acting like unelected royalty. Yet even before independence, John Adams argued in favor of a “republican monarchy” of laws, lamenting, “We have so many Men of Wealth, of ambitious Spirits, of Intrigue … that incessant Factions will disturb our Peace.”

Looking at the United States, today, Adams was prescient, with the country almost evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, special interests dominant, and poisonous partisan gridlock destroying Washington, D.C. While Adams favored a republican monarch with absolute veto powers, today we need a person who can sit above politics and help strengthen our commitment to republican values. We need a king, or something like one.

The First Citizen would serve one 15-year term, thus ensuring that he would have to deal with at least two presidents. The First Citizen, along with his or her spouse, would represent America at all social and ceremonial meetings with foreign heads of state and would perform civic activities for all national holidays. Instead of the president, the First Citizen would pardon turkeys, welcome Super Bowl champions, open Olympics, lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, light the national Christmas Tree and the like. He or she would also commemorate important national anniversaries, such as major battles, and would be the chief mourner at national tragedies or memorial services.

Interesting read. I do admit having a non-partisan head of state has its advantages.

I’m getting so fed up watching all this stuff happen to the U.S. that I’m ready to come do it myself. First order of business would be imposing a 5% flat sales tax, nothing else. Second would be deporting all illegals and muslims. Not very politically correct, but cultural suicide is cultural suicide. The third thing to be done would be restore the original constitution.

Nothing in the US these days is non-partisan. Even elected coroners and dog catchers have to express the proper leftist and politically correct sentiments to get elected and to retain their jobs. Thus any ‘First Citizen’ would likely end up being a shill for the Democcommie party.

It’s really what the left has been fighting for all along. They very much believe in the idea of well-educated elites making the decision for the rest of us.

New world order “runs” the UK just like it does America. The UK has this ceremonial monarchy, it does nothing to slow down new world order.

The Royal family and the peerage is completely intertwined with new world order.

Some honest research into the British East India Company will reveal just how much intertwined they were, even by the 18th and 19th centuries.

Wow, Hitler's brownshirts are really starting to crawl out of the woodwork. There have been a lot of apologists for tyrants, not just the typical dem columnist, but also some on the right, pushing for a more absolute executive and mealy mouthing the Constitution.

Keep your powder dry because the hammer is coming down.

No. Even the Europeans in their wisdom have rendered their once powerful kings and queens to mere figureheads and tabloid fodder.
A king here would be like a President for life. No thanks!

And free up the president for more time golfing. Although I would love to see a president dump the silly tradition of sentencing turkeys number 3 and 4 to death and roasting by pardoning turkeys 1 and 2.

Your Constitution is silly America.

We need to scrap it and just make Obama king.

Now shut your racist face and go pay your taxes. Your king needs another vacation. :)

Second would be deporting all illegals and muslims. Not very politically correct, but cultural suicide is cultural suicide.

We bring in 1.2 million LEGAL IMMIGRANTS A YEAR. This is cultural suicide, especially since most are from the Third World and 87% of the 1.2 million are minorities as classified by the USG. Immigrants drive 75% of our population growth. In 1970, one in 21 residents of this country was foreign born; today it is one in 8, the highest in 90 years; and within a decade, it will be one in 7 the highest in our history.

"First Citizen" sounds like something out of the French Revolution.

How's this for an idea? Have an elected President, who serves a single six-year term. And have an elected Prime Minister, who serves a four-year term, the limit is two terms.

The President is the head of state, the Prime Minister the head of government. Hopefully, the President would be a last-ditch check on any Prime Minister excesses.

This President would function like the Queen of England does today, but would have a bit more power, perhaps a veto power.

My nominees:

President: Sarah Palin
Prime Minister: Ted Cruz
