A Nasa rocket due to be visible across the East Coast on its way to the International Space Station has blown up on the launchpad.

The rocket exploded six seconds after lift-off from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island in Virginia.

Engineers said there were no problems reported before the launch, and say they have 'no early indications' of what went wrong.

'A mishap has occurred. we have lost the vehicle,' controllers said seconds after blast off.

It didn't explode on the launchpad, it exploded in the air and fell back on to the launchpad. Why is this story buried?

Not everything is a political cause or should be politicized. A shuttle exploded during Reagan admin when we pumped millions into the program...a shuttle disintegrated upon reentry during the Bush administration. Now this during Obambi admin...sometimes sh!t just happens..not everything is a political event. Furthermore this was privately run by a private company not NASA

Orbital Sciences, which used a refurbished Russian engine in the doomed Antares rocket, insists that the technology is sound and that there are no better modern alternatives.

Sounds like NASA is privatizing with the wrong guys.

I had heard an analyst from the WSJ say that there is a one in three chance of a new launcher failing. Considering that this includes the early launches of the Vanguard, Atlas and Titan missiles, when we were just learning how to build these, the odds might be a little better today. However, we are still dealing with what is ideally a controlled explosion.

So it's not Bush's fault?

Sounds like you are leaping to unjustified conclusions.

We do not yet even know the cause of the failure.

People seem to forget when we first started our space ventures we lost hundreds of test pilots trying to break the sound barrier and hundreds of test rockets...private industry is now a virgin in this venture and will also suffer its bruises. Perspective is really needed on this one before it can be perfected.

At least Space-X has developed and built its own engines. Orbital has been using Soviet built engines. Not Soviet designed engines, but engines that date back to the old Soviet Union.

This is not a presidential matter and Makes us look petty for even attempting to discuss politics around this. Even if a publication tried to make those ties :-)
