Woman who claimed gang-rape at Univ. of Virginia in Rolling Stone article ordered to testify

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 5 (UPI) -- A woman who made serious sexual assault accusations against members of a University of Virginia fraternity -- which were featured in a sweeping 2014 Rolling Stone magazine article -- will have to testify this week in a defamation lawsuit against the magazine. . . . An independent review by the Columbia School of Journalism ultimately determined that in producing the article, Rolling Stone violated "basic, even routine journalistic practice" by failing to fact-check or corroborate key portions of the woman's story before the piece was published.

Police investigators later said there was no evidence to support the woman's accusations of being gang-raped.

This was basically Duke Lacrosse all over again, only with less governmental/political "oomph" behind it (no conniving, politically needy prosecutor trying to create election capital, as in the Duke case).

There are at least three different lawsuits going on, by UVA, the dean involved, and the fraternity, with targets being the woman, Rolling Stone, and Wenner Media, the publisher. May they all be very successful.

Ping; given your close following of the Duke case, I thought you might like this. It is not good news for the defendants in these lawsuits.

When did the Rolling Stone magazine stop being about music and entertainment?

Bankrupt the lying bitch, Rolling Stone, and the university.

See O'Sullivan's First Law:

"All organizations that are not actually right-wing will over time become left-wing."

Same period that National Geographic and Reader’s Digest shifted. All started to occur around late 1990s.

Go out and ask people when was the last time that they looked at any of those three magazines. Each has lost a large segment of their base. I haven’t touched a Rolling Stone since 1998, and NG/RD since around 2004.

Does the law pertain to countries as well?

There was plenty of political content as far back as the mid-70s, when I was a subscriber as a teenager.

For a time, yes.

Eventually, something happens that makes (what's left of) the population turn back to conservatism.

Actually, UVA acted reasonably well here, unlike Duke.

I gave up on NG in the late 90s. It was tough, I’d had a subscription since the early 70s.

It’s been six months since Rupert Murdock bought NG and I have these hopes that he’ll eventually bring in some management from the 1980s vision of the magazine....going back to geography and culture forum. The issue from the period of Bush’s re-election episode (completely global warming from first page to last page) was the final straw for me.

She will be forced to testify will she? That might be a bit of an embarrassment, wouldn’t you say? I would suspect, that when they ask her any questions, they already know the answers. Embarrassing.

I wonder if Dr Hook would still like to get their picture on the cover?

A little before MTV stopped being about playing popular music. Maybe during the Clinton Administration.

Same thing happened with Scientific America. I stopped my subscription in '95. The articles became dumbed down and started a massive left wing slant.

You haven’t seen National Geographic since 2004?
Then you missed the Michelle Obama centerfold.

When sci-fi changed its name to “si-fi” it also took a nosedive. Comedy Central was once funny, and featured shows like mst-3000! Those days are long gone. It has been a coordinated dumbing down by all the networks and publishers. They must meet every year to decide how stupid they’ll get, based on what they think the majority can stomach.

Cops and married with children are the only good shows on anymore, for me, and they are reruns for the most part.

The woman, whose real identity has not been reported...

The woman's real identity has been reported all over the place, as the author of this piece knows perfectly well. Her name is Jackie Coakley.

UPI, please stop pretending that you are protecting a rape victim here by not publishing her name. Jackie Coakley is not a victim. The people who were damaged by her lies are the victims.
