Wal-Mart is hoping to gain ground against online rivals by rolling out new discounts for buying items online for in-store pickup. Starting April 19, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer “will launch what it calls the Pickup Discount,” Fox Business reported Wednesday. Customers will be able to get lower prices on about 10,000 different items if they order them ahead online for shipment to a local store.

I’ve done pickup. Good experience on all occasions.

I have also done pickups at a Walmart. Pretty easy, and now a discount?

I'll take it!

That’s smart, they’ve needed something bold to slow the Amazon juggernaut.

I did my 1st “pick-up” at a WM a few weeks ago....saved me from having to find it myself in a giant supercenter! (i.e. small cell phone toolkit, is it in electronics or hardware??)

Geez, and I just spent a hundred bucks at Walmart on line for materials to hook up a TV antenna - well, I did get free shipping, so.....

I’ve used that, ‘order on-line, pick-up in store’ for a microwave for my Dad. Worked just fine. I’ll use the service again with a discount...You Betcha!

Some stores also offer grocery service. You order on line, or can call in an order, they have it ready to go, you drive up and they load you up and you’re on your way.

A really nice idea for Seniors that can still drive, but not get around all that well.

Does this apply storewide and including grocery items or is it limited in some way?
I know the article mentions 10,000 or some number like that.

I’ll second that. Only wish that I could have a shorter time between order and pick up.

to gain ground against online rivals...

This is what healthy free-market competition looks like.

The one time I tried it, the first 3 or 4 clerks in the store didn’t know where the pickup counter was, and when I finally found it, there was no one working there...

There is an online map of where the pick-up counter is at the store you designate. There are "good" and "bad" Walmarts. The good ones have their pickup counters staffed. Good Luck!

I have been doing this since Amazon jacked up their free shipping price point

If one is using a Mac with the Safari browser, the Walmart website is spotty at best and useless most of the time.

Now, before the Apple-bashers jump in, Amazon works perfectly with Safari, and Walmart turning away a significant fraction of their customers through incompatible website design is just plan stupid.

OTOH it is an interesting business model -- shipping to distribution centers for customer pickup. If the shipments can piggyback on normal Walmart delivery trucks I can see a savings. The other savings comes from substituting low-price in-store labor for much more costly individual delivery drivers. Of course, as a consumer, they are going to have to offer a significant discount to get me to drive to their store and wade through the "people of Walmart" I find there.

It seems to me it combines the delayed gratification of on-line buying with the negatives of driving to the store and standing in line. Now if I can select from in-stock merchandise at internet prices and get the immediate delivery this would bring, that would be a plus...

At the larger (supercenter) stores customer pickup is at the front right beside customer service - opposite the grocery side of the store. Walk in the door, turn left, or right since some stores have mirror image layouts, and you're there.

Beyond that, they needed to hold on to customers who refuse to submit themselves to the savages inside a Wal-Mart. My town got one a few years back, and the initial excitement wore off pretty quickly as it was stormed by criminals from neighboring Newark and (to a lesser extent) Jersey City. Now people in town want Wal-Mart to pick up the tab for our cops, since they are there all the time.

Not always true.

At the supercenter in our little town, it is all the way in the back. Actually not a bad place for it, except for the fact that no one is manning the counter.

I don't fault them for having start-up issues. In a year or two, they may give Amazon a run for their internet money.

Amazon does delivery to your door. If you are just looking for a place for pet food try looking at Chewy they deliver to your door too. https://www.chewy.com/b/food-332

Just don’t look for fresh food, you still have to go to the store for that, but canned, boxed is doable if you want all name brands. I buy a lot of Kroger brands, especially coffee and pasta sauce, it’s better than Ragu.

For new mom’s you can order large boxes of diapers and wipes at a reasonable cost. 168 new born is less than $44 and if you have Prime which is $99 a year shipping is free. And don’t want to get a Costco or Sam’s Club because you don’t buy bulk canned goods; I know it says Smile, it’s my chosen charity to St. Jude’s Children’s Cancer Hospital when I Amazon shop, every dime helps a child with cancer no matter how small that is: https://smile.amazon.com/Huggies-Little-Snugglers-Diapers-Count/dp/B002YD8DNW/ref=sr_1_11_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1492085015&sr=1-11&keywords=huggy+diapers

Over 700 wipes to the box https://smile.amazon.com/Huggies-Natural-Care-Baby-Wipes/dp/B00176R2IO/ref=sr_1_3_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1492085406&sr=1-3&keywords=huggy+wipes
