Pentagon scenario of new Korean war estimates 20,000 deaths daily in S. Korea, retired general says

A retired U.S. general said a Pentagon war scenario showed a conventional war with North Korea could result in about 20,000 deaths per day in South Korea, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Meanwhile, a retired U.S. Navy admiral sees a 50/50 chance of a conventional conflict with North Korea although much less likelihood of a nuclear war.

On Monday, North Korea's foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, accused President Donald Trump of declaring war against the hermit regime and threatened that the North has the right to shoot down U.S. strategic bombers even if they are flying in international airspace.

Last week, Ri told reporters the regime might detonate a hydrogen weapon in the Pacific. Up to now, the North's nuclear tests have been underground.

Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Logan told CNBC on Monday, "Obviously North Korea is a threat." And he pledged the U.S. military will defend "both U.S. homeland and our allies against that threat."

Defense experts expressed skepticism the North would have an easy time shooting down advanced U.S. military aircraft.....

I wonder if that retired US general and admiral served with the ROK ("South Korean") military? I did and I have no doubt that they'll hand the People's Army their heads.

Does anyone in the Pentagon seriously believe a war on the Korean peninsula would stay conventional for longer than a few hours, if that?

God forbid it happens but if it does it’s gonna go nuclear real fast and North Korea will end up a hole in the ground by the end of the day.

SK has one of the largest and well-trained armies in the world.

Neo-cons saber-rattling to commit more Americans lives in a fight that SK can easily win on its own.

Interesting thought. To my knowledge, NK has no foreign troops stationed in their country. Yet the SK, with its vaunted fierce warriors, wants American forces sacrificed as a tripwire. Don’t we have better uses for our troops?

It’s not the North Koreans we have to worry about. We already showed we could beat them in a war. It is the Chinese who bailed them out last time. They are the ones to worry about. China is why Korea is not unified.

NK troops are malnourished, under-trained, and are utilizing 50s or 60s-era weaponry and equipment.

They are no match for SK.

Conventional warfare?

If you don’t kneecap North Korea in the first five minutes South Korea will be a cinder block.

Is that the plan?

Best wrap it up in 72 hours then.

China will be protecting their borders against North Korean refugees. Germany is the lesson for why Korea will not be unified. South Korea can't carry the financial burden of absorbing the millions of backwards, starving, brainwashed North Koreans.

I think the ideal outcome for everyone involved will be regime change following by a slow-paced transition of North Korean's populace into the civilized world

20k per day is worse than Gettysburg. I have my doubts unless the war is nuclear or only lasts one day with a mindless all-out attack by the North on a mission to kill civilians before they are all killed.

Does anyone in the Pentagon seriously believe a war on the Korean peninsula would stay conventional for longer than a few hours, if that?

After both sides pass the big blow-off during which they fire off all their expensive conventional munitions (first 24-48 hrs) both sides pretty much hit the wall. That's when the Norks will be tempted to use unconventional weapons -- chemical, biological & nuclear.

Exactly! It would be a very short war, even if it was strictly conventional. The South Korean Army aided by the American forces would overwhelm the North quite quickly.

Yes, but how many days until most NORK artillery behind blast doors in mountains are eliminated? WEEKS?

Plus they aren't mechanized. That doesn't mean that they can't hug the mountains and slow up an SK move northward. But it does limit their ability to move beyond Seoul. Fuel, or lack thereof, would be the ultimate limiting factor for NK.

A relative is retired artillery, way up. Says there will be well into six figures dead in Seoul before nork arty is shut down by ROK ground forces.

If the norks start losing badly, China will enter to create a buffer zone, at the very least. The best solution is to give the mainland part of NK to China and the Penninsula part to SK. The two can share the burden and we end up with one Korea.
