How Conservatives Are Being Destroyed by Facebook, Twitter and Google Without Even Realizing It
Townhall ^ | Jan 13, 2018 | John Hawkins

Social media IS the new public square. It’s the place you go when you want to reach out and find an audience.

…….Except Facebook has for all intents and purposes announced that it’s killing off pages. So much for having a conservative voice there.

As James O’Keefe just revealed in his latest sting, Twitter felt comfortable banning pro-Trump accounts and one of his unwitting sources said, “Yeah you look for Trump, or America, and you have like five thousand keywords to describe a redneck. Then you look and parse all the messages, all the pictures, and then you look for stuff that matches that stuff.” Charles Johnson, who’s a conservative gadfly, is currently suing Twitter because it admitted that he didn’t violate Twitter’s policies; Twitter just wanted to get rid of him. It’s good to know that if you’re conservative, you can spend years building up an audience on Twitter and the liberals at Twitter can arbitrarily throw you off their service because they decide they don’t like your views.

It’s easy to say, “Build your own social media website and compete with them,” but we’re talking about companies with billions of dollars and monopolistic control of their markets. The obvious solution would be to break these companies up or to at least acknowledge their importance to modern society and regulate them heavily, but conservatives don’t seem to be interested enough in either solution to even THREATEN to do this.

We’ve already lost the schools, Hollywood and the mainstream media. What happens when you can’t get out conservative opinion via social media because they block, shadow ban and demonetize everyone who gets any traction? What happens if they put rules in place that essentially make expressing conservative opinions something that gets you kicked off their service?

I'm trained in the Austrian school, so I'm about as free market, non-interventionist as one can get. But it's time to use the antitrust laws and whatever other rules we can to break up Google, Twitter, Facebook, and the rest.

I've de-Googled, but at this point, they may be immune to market pressures We need to make room for competition.

For starters, try Wampum. Write to your representatives and call them at (202) 224-3121, and at their district offices, and tell them you want the antitrust laws applied to Google, Facebook, and Twitter, and call the White House at (202) 456-1111 and tell them you want action taken to break these monopolies.

Twitter and Facebook, you don’t have to use them. They suck, but what they do strikes me as legit. Google - Android, Gmail, Search/Adwords, Youtube - all anti competitive AND political beasts. Adwords is the key - who trusts the Google bidding to see if you’re paying the right number? If you give google a dollar to spend they’ll spend it, unfailingly, in seconds. #BreakUpGoogle

A baker has to bake a gay cake,
but Twitter doesn’t have to
provide service to a conservative.

Hm.

Social media sites have a finite lifespan. I’ve seen many unstoppable juggernauts disappear almost overnight.

Censored conservatives don’t cease to exist. They move on to some other site, leading to a tipping point and eventual demise of the censoring site.

They aren’t destroying us any more than the MSM has for the past several decades. They are trying to bury us, to villify us, etc.

But we still find ways to get our message out. We still find ways to connect and even better we find ways to influence our government. One of the greatest memes was from Glenn Beck: “We surround them.”

Just because there is a liberal backlash from the social media doesn’t mean they are winning or will win.

There are many Facebook posts today that are slamming the Schummer, Pelosi, and the other socialist Democrats for putting illegal immigrants ahead of our US military. The people know what’s going on.

Genius point.

This would be a great discussion for the country to have. Maybe just a question from the President at the SOTU. Who designates special protected groups? What gets a group protected status over other groups? Why isn’t one’s minority belief in a constitutional, minimal government as worthy of Special Status as a belief in Mohammed as a prophet, or one’s sexual interest in ones own gender?

Because if being officially persecuted is one of the criteria for Protected Group Status, constitutionalists are deeply and constantly persecuted here for their beliefs.

I DON'T use them, but it you really have to make a pain of yourself to others. It seems every Little League mom who organizes the practices and games, every music school and every kid's dance class uses that stuff (along with texting, which I also don't do).

It is not quite compulsory, but it is darn close for a lot of social activities. Even things like contest entries for buyers of CD-ROM based math programs are EXPECTED to use Facebook. If you email and ask for an alternative method, you will be accommodated, but not everyone is a stubborn Pole like me who is willing to jump through hoops.

You can’t. And we need to exert pressure on these sites. How do you build a competitor? Monopolies are not free market either.

Sure you can. If there are non-economic factors that enter into you calculus (e.g. national security, food self-reliance) that apply to some things and not others, then you are pro free markets in most, but not all areas. It might mean you are not a pure libertarian. That's okay for many of us.
