Half a century after the "Red Scare," playwright and memoirist Lillian Hellman, whose name is often coupled with her adversary Senator Joe McCarthy, has emerged relatively unscathed in the court of elite progressivist opinion despite the exposure of her manifold fabrications and deceptions. Such is the power of the press and the cultural salience of left-wing attitudes in America.
Hellman, a passionate supporter of the Soviet Union even when Stalin's crimes had been widely publicized, was subpoenaed before the House Un-American Activities Committee by McCarthy [see comments –ed.] and was subsequently lionized by the media, the commentariat, and the entertainment industry from the 1950s to the present for refusing to name names. She was elevated to the plinth of truth and courage while McCarthy was effectively consigned to the Eighth Circle of the Inferno as an evil counselor and a sower of discord.
We cannot deny, after the release of the Venona transcripts, that McCarthy was mainly right. There was indeed a concerted and largely successful attempt to infiltrate the White House by Soviet agents during the 1940s and 1950s.
Hellman, however, was a notorious liar, of whom novelist Mary McCarthy (no relation to Joseph) said, "Every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the.'" Dorothy Gallagher in her 2014 biography Lillian Hellman: An Imperious Life wrote "She dissembles ... hedges, misleads."
In her acclaimed memoir Pentimento, Hellman told of her revolutionary generosity and grave personal risk in smuggling money to a certain Julia, a member of the anti-fascist underground in Austria just prior to the war – a blatant lie, perpetuated by Jane Fonda playing Hellman in the film Julia. There was no Julia. Hellman's reported adventures in to Berlin and her cloak-and-dagger activities were the stuff of pure fiction.

As I point out on many McCarthy threads, M. Stanton Evan showed us that McCarthy was right, and the Leftist narrative about him is a lie. And he did it using Soviet archives for a significant part of his proof.

Lillian Hellman’s generation was the first generation to use Holocaust as a distraction. It was both ingenious and diabolical.

They were current of events in the soviet union. they knew that stalin was planning a massive Holocaust against Russian jews—who comprised the second largest group in the russian communist party after the great russians themselves. stalin would have carried it off too. he had the concentration camps already set up. The russian propaganda machine was in high gear against russian jews by 1953. 100 or so russian jews had already been executed.
But suddenly in 1953 stalin died. so the pogrom was called off. but in the same year the rosenbergs were executed for passing the secrets that gave the soviet union the atom bomb.
Now remember 1953. In that year that the democrat president Trump was succeeded by the republican president Eisenhower.
because of events in the old soviet union—american communists read a very different story into the execution of the rosenbergs. they imputed to the republicans exactly what stalin had planned to do to russian jews. they deemed the rosenbergs execution as the beginning of a pogrom and the mccarthy hearings as just a stalin like show trial as a precurser to wide scale persecutions.
that’s why lillian hellman was such a cause celebre. her and many communists like her—were people leftists/communists considered to be the guardians at the gate who helped hold off the existential threat to america’s jews posed by republicans.
it was a blood libel of course but given the nearness of the holocaust and the still strangeness of the USA to many communists—it was a perfectly plausible lie.
In just the same way the democrats today impute to the Trump administration the collusion business—something that they themselves did. and its perfectly plausible too—to democrats. after all what normal person/democrat on the west side of manhattan or west hollywood or san francisco would vote for trump? nobody. that is nobody any democrat in those areas knew. therefor trump’s election must have been a trick; the result of some russian scheme.
Why russians? because the democrats paid for the russians to do the steele dossier.
Again, remember the democrats impute to the republicans the evil that they themselves do.

Joseph McCarthy was a Senator (from Wisconsin), and had nothing to do with the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities.
