Scientists developing cow-free milk that tastes like the real thing

Scientists at San Francisco-based biotech start-up Muufri -- (get it, moo free?) -- have developed a formula to re-create cow milk: six proteins for structure and function and eight fatty acids for flavor and richness, according to Muufri’s website.

The milk product is also free of lactose and cholesterol and because it’s created in a lab, its seen as a sustainable alternative to traditional dairy cattle operations.

According to Muufri, lactose is “partially indigestible by 75 percent of adults,” so the decision to leave it out creates a healthier product. Founders of Muufri, Ryan Pandya, Perumal Gandhi and Isha Datar, claim the milk will be free of all bacteria, giving their milk an “unprecedentedly long shelf life” with no pasteurization required.

If I can’t pronounce it, I’m not eating it.

Milk and butter my body recognizes as real food and knows what to do with it.

Margarine and faux milk, not so much......

My First Sgt in Germany said the same thing about the extremely ultra pasteurized milk that he threw out on the hood of the jeep everyday for the 45 day ReForGer field trip. Nobody touched that crap either.

What’s the last 27% left of the one cow, the rounds?

Naaw, it's a cow who has mastitis, and is only giving milk out of one teat.

It's 27% not 25% because ole Bessie is *r-e-a-l-l-y* trying to make up or it...

I was envisioning the slim pickins left of a carcass hanging in his shed out back.

Sometimes scientists invent non-milk milks that don't go very well on your morning cereal, and may come back later to surprise you.   (IOW, you have to keep a close eye on some of these non-milk milks...)

So... because the fake milk is made in a lab, no materials are required to produce it?

It’s like they think that lab produced food would just be produced from nothing! In reality, I haven’t seen a single one of these fake foods that could be produced artificially more economically than the natural process.

processed food causes cancer.

That's why I stick with water.

I have Condensed water and Powdered Water. Mix them together and you get fresh water.

Dehydrated water ain’t bad either. You can practically breathe it in. To reconstitute, use flame or a spark. Stays fresher longer.

It comes down to packaging, taste and cost.

I was just at the store: Milk was $1.18/gallon. I think they might have a hard time competing on cost.
