The Florida Legislature made national headlines this week when it passed SB 7026, also known as the "Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act."
The law is headed to Gov. Rick Scott, who is likely to sign it today. Much has been made of the political implications of the Republican-dominated legislature defying even in small ways the wishes of the National Rifle Association.

Scott’s consultant driven Senate election PR stunt will be totally overshadowed by the Norks. But we will be stuck with this garbage forever.
He just signed away his political future. I don’t vote for spineless gun grabbers!!!
Anything repealing the no report or minimization of behavioral problems by minorities?
Agree. I sent him a letter stating that, almost exactly.
If we’d just had a few more laws, none of those kids would have been killed.
I don’t like the age requirement in the bill. But I will vote for Rick Scott over Bill Nelson.
And I bet the NRA endorses Scott.
Scott is a typical doormat GOPe corportist. Nelson will steamroll him.
So under this Bill, law enforcement can deem who should own firearms and who shouldn’t? WHAT COULD GO WRONG!!!
VETO SB 7026!
This bill is fairly reasonable in most aspects and it would be political suicide for him to veto it.
If he’s going to vote like Nelson, why bother to vote against Nelson?
I dont like the age requirement in the bill. But I will vote for Rick Scott over Bill Nelson.
And I bet the NRA endorses Scott.
Nelson will have a motivated Dem base GOTV and unlimited funds from Democrat billionaires. No way milquetoast Scott wins in this environment. Sorry.
Just adding up the numbers from the article, there’s 256.8 million of new spending this year for the Florida tax payers. A lot of that in the bill doesn’t address stopping shootings, rather it’s after the fact bandaids and building bigger school administrations.
Yeh North Florida and the Panhandle will be thrilled that you can’t hunt til you are 21. Nelson’s senate seat is safe.
Scott wants to be the next GOP Amnesty Senator from FL.
He’s revealing his inner Bush League Republican.
If we didnt have that gun free zone law, those kids would not be dead. This new law is stupid as well and lawsuits will fly.
So, what exactly does this bill do that would have prevented the crazed democrat CRUZ from killing 17 kids??
Scott convinced me he’s not worth the cost of the ink to color in the bubble on the ballot next to his name (absentee voters have to buy their own pens).
In ‘16 I did the same thing for Rubio after he said all who opposed his immigration bill were raciss.
Pragmatism has its uses - and its limits. Dumb and Dumber helped me find mine.
