Responding to the shooting this morning at a Santa Fe, Texas high school, President Trump vowed that his administration would take action.
My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and do everything we can to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others, Trump said during an event at the White House. Everyone must work together at every level of government to keep our children safe.
Exactly what that means in practice is anyones guess.
According to the White House, Trump spoke with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, pledging to work with the governor and to provide federal assistance.
Trump has previously promised his administration would work on school safety before. Following the now infamous high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., the president met with students for an emotional forum in February. There, he promised tougher background checks and mental health screens for gun buyers.
Universal background checks? Raising the minimum age to 21? Whats your guess?
I’d be surprised if we don’t find out soon that this kid had major problems, and was a fire-cracker waiting to go off.
I do get your point, that we need to put some sort of check in place since these schools seem to be dangerous places, and perhaps we should shut them down.
I will point out though, there is an initial approximate 14 year waiting period to get in, and each year there’s another three month elimination period.
>>How about parents start doing their jobs, and stop letting the schools raise their children?
Parents, “their”???
That’s the first hurdle. Stop making single motherhood and divorce so attractive to young women.
It is also illegal to bring a gun closer than 1000 feet from at least some schools. It’s certainly illegal to bring them inside.
It would be interesting to know how many laws were violated here.
Laws don’t work.
+1000
RE:
1. It is illegal for a 17 year old to purchase a shotgun.
2. It is illegal for a 17 year old to purchase a handgun.
Most importantly:
3. It is ILLEGAL to murder another person.
Yep. Since the introduction of gun free school zones, school shootings have increased THREE FOLD!
How?
.... Only thing that could have possibly stopped him from initiating the shooting would have been a metal detector with an armed guard present...
He got into a gunfight with the armed guard present, the resource officer. The officer was shot in the arm and was in critical condition at one point.
A resource officer did stop the last school shooting.
There are videos of this event.
He had a sawed off shotgun and a .38, plus, possibly, pipe bombs.
Not really. President Trump has clearly stated that schools need to be protected by armed guards.
This guy had AntiFa stuff on him. Gun-carrying delusional lying leftists are the threat.
Stop with the “their oughta be a law”. We should not want a Federal solution. The FEDS created this problem with the gun free zones.
Repeal gun free zones and let the school districts, counties, states solve this problem.
A good first step would be to stop paying them to have kids out of wedlock.
Flame away.
>>How?
You don’t live in the United States?
The problem with the existing law is that it is unconstitutional. The rule should be school property, not 1000 feet as school property is easily identifiable and reinforces the right of the property owner (school district) to govern what is allowed on their grounds.
Individual states should be allowed to add exemptions for police, armed guards, armed teachers, CCW holders etc.
I won't flame you for that. I want less government.
Opening your legs doesn't make you a mother just as ejaculating in a girl doesn't make you a father.
WE can play with the language too ... especially if our posterity is going to be misguided, mentally abused and murdered.
We have enough evidence.
Whatever.
The next one is already being planned.
Someone wake me when it happens.
Never mind, don’t.
I do not care about this anymore.
I presumed you had specific policies in mind, not just a goal. Was I mistaken?
Smaller schools are easier to secure than larger ones.
Cost go rapidly up and there is very little benefit when you start to secure entrances with metal detectors and limited access. Video surveillance systems are mostly useless as preventive features.
The more effective measure is expulsion of troublesome students with follow-up monitoring. Every one of the mass-killers to date have shown plain-spoken indicators prior to their killing sprees. "Everybody knows" who the risks are (except there will unfortunately be a lot of false positives).
What is joked about has been though about.
If a person is determined to murder people and doesn’t care if they are caught, there is almost nothing one can do about it.
If they are clearly nuts, sometimes something can be done. Arming teachers etc. would help but nothing can absolutely stop a suicide killer.
That is why the Kamikazi were so dangerous.
