'In lieu of flowers, kill a drug dealer': NC mom pens obituary after son's suicide

LELAND, N.C. (WECT) - It's every mother's worst nightmare. On Sunday, April 15, Shawn Winkler shot himself in the head in the garage of his Leland family home. He was 30 years old.

"Shawn started out as a very happy, loving boy, " said his mother Sarah Winkler in a document she sent to WECT news.

On the day Shawn killed himself, Sarah said he began acting erratically and trashing his room. Shawn, armed with a gun, told his mother he was going to Holly Ridge to kill his girlfriend and five others. Sarah said Sean believed everyone was in on a scheme to drive him crazy.

"That's when I heard a pop sound. It sounded like those plastic poppers at New Year's. The next thing I know, officers were running around everywhere putting up crime scene tape," Winkler explained.

"I was told Sean shot himself in the head in the garage. He was still breathing when he got to the hospital. Once at the hospital, he tested positive for marijuana and meth," Winkler said.

On a side note, I remember when a 30-year-old referencing his “girlfriend” was considered quaint.

People married younger and tended to stay together longer.

But who knows what this guy’s demons were.

The problem with your approach is the azzhats doing the removing and placing are libs handing over kids to more libs who just want the money. The left busted up families and now whine that conservatives are bad for having families. There’s a reason the left wants all kids in college and in debt when they get a degree in dumbazz. Think real hard and maybe you’ll figure it out.

I had two choices after 12th grade. Go to college (I hated school) or join the military before I got drafted. Sub choice wait get drafted and learn the jungle ways or try to get some technical training I may be able to use. Dad was 82nd airboure. Field stripping M1’s didn’t pay good in 1954. So he advised not waiting for my number to show up. Enter the USN submarine service. Staying home wasn’t an option. You don’t have to leave but you ain’t staying here we’re dads final words on the subject. Thing is I had a dad.

Maybe then it’s time for good people with capacity to stop buying consumer goods and take in some kids to steer them right, and not for the money.

That’s sorta going to have to be the way the problem gets solved if it is ever to be.

>> Single motherhood is an abomination.

Indeed, and not to condemn the mom that didn’t demand the singularity.

Indeed, and not to condemn the mom that didn’t demand the singularity.

Single motherhood by choice or by irresponsibility is an extreme blight on society, but the tactic used to bury that truth is the same used by the Left for everything: find the one in a million example that doesn't deserve condemnation and use it to justify the other 99,999. If a woman chooses to be a single mother, she should be condemned. If she chooses a husband (or boyfriend) poorly, and he leaves her, she AND he should be condemned.

The fools will, of course, trot out the examples of widows and the like to deflect criticism of the women who act irresponsibly, but it is the duty of reasonable people to ignore fools.

I am going to flip this on its head. I certainly feel for the mother and i expect i would feel horrible at the death of my child. But in the same vein, why can’t it be ‘In lieu of flowers, kill a drug user’ ?

My problem with the sentiment of killing a drug dealer is it absolves the drug user of any wrong doing or responsibility.

Suppose we kill every single known drug dealer. Would that solve the problem? I say no simply because the drug itself still exists and the drug user, would and could go get it still. Maybe they would start growing the plant themself or go and create a drug lab to produce it.

Again, i have sympathy for the mother but the drug user has responsibility to this situation too. In my opinion, the drug user has most of the responsibility, not the drug dealer.

"Gee Mom, I wonder who might possibly be at least partially responsible for that?"

What you're insinuating may be true, in this case. And you have a valid point in reference to what single parenthood has wrought in society at large. However, some single parents are due to the death of a spouse. ...I know this firsthand.

And even in those cases, raising kids alone is not easy and indeed those kids are more likely to have issues.

Im for getting rid of drug dealers but in reality “a brave single mother” sounds like it takes a village agenda failed leaving the brave single mother a victim in this all, according to the liberal mindset

“Single motherhood is an abomination.”

One reason I chose never to have children. In the ‘70s my girlfriends were having kids, and their husbands or significant others would disappear leaving them holding the bag — the diaper bag.

Their lives became a living hell with no end in sight. The kids were relegated to daycare and they connected with daycare workers more than with their mothers. Finances were an ever-present problem so the children didn’t receive what they needed, and always felt insecure. That’s no way to grow up.

Kids need two parents and stability.

"I'm sorry your son is dead, but he was never really living anyway."

That statement tells us a LOT more about you than about him.

a single mother should be shunned as a pox on society...

Out of the mouth of yet another compassionate Christian. Is that what they teach you in YOUR church?

“I’m sorry your son is dead, but he was never really living anyway.”

The second half of your statement appears to nullify any expression of sympathy in the first. It would be very harsh to say this in person to the grieving mother, and never come across as a genuine expression of sympathy.

I understand why this mother made her “in lieu of flowers” request, even if it is not completely correct assignment of responsibility for her son’s drug addiction. I may have expressed similar sentiments too. Recently, our President made a public comment about the death penalty for drug dealers. Her opinion appears to be aligned with his. If she had instead said that she supported the President’s position in light of what happened to her, the article would have had a much different narrative. Hence, would you object to the President’s statement for the same reason you object to hers? Just asking.

Yesterday, I had the rare opportunity to be patted down like an apprehended subject in order to enter a jail facility. I attended an event where 30 inmates had successfully passed an in house rehab program. These are human beings who are responsible for their drug problems, and some of them will probably fall again when they go back into the streets. I did not hear one of them who spoke about recovery blame their problem on a drug dealer. The scourge of drugs is devastating, the suffering, pain, health problems, even death these souls and their families have endured, and some may continue to endure once out. I don’t have a simple solution to this problem. But I what I have seen is that those who turned their lives over to God and had the positive support structures to continue recovery have been successful. Kicking them when they are down is not going to help. Addiction is so powerful that shear will power and (learning to or) making good decisions is not enough to overcome it. I grieve for this woman’s loss of her son.
