Scientists hope the pea-sized blobs can help explain the rise of modern humans.
Neanderthals went extinct about 40,000 years ago, but thanks to cutting-edge science, there is now a lab in California that has petri dishes filled with pea-sized versions of the cavemen's brains.
Why are researchers cultivating and studying these minibrains? The reason, they say, is that these small neural lumps may reveal why Neanderthals died out and Homo sapiens went on to conquer much of the planet.
"Neanderthals are fascinating because they shared Earth with us, and there is now genetic evidence we actually bred with them," study leader Alysson Muotri, director of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Stem Cell Program.
Perhaps genetic differences between Neanderthal and human brains explain their demise and our success, Muotri said. In other words, it's possible that humans achieved great technological advancements because we have sophisticated neural networks, while Neanderthals didn't.

As someone with a lot of Neaderthal it sounds like these scientists have pea brains.

There’s really no evidence they were killed off. It’s just as likely that they simply “inter-married” with the more numerous homo sapien sapeins until they ceased to exist as a separate people.
They were bigger, stronger, and perhaps smarter. Sounds like good breeding stock, to me.

I am really tempted to derail the thread, so I'll just say this...
I hate fake news. Those brains are as mature as they will ever be, and happily serving as elected criminals in the California legislature, and just gave themselves ANOTHER raise.
That reminds me that I need to contact The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association to find out if Petition signature forms are being prepared to rescind the last two raises that governor Moron and the legislature have given themselves.
If the really, really stupid elected criminals in Sacramento want to see government by initiatives, I am totally ready to accommodate them.

iT MAY TAKE TWO Proposition initiatives to correct the legalized theft of the taxpayers...
First the elimination of the "independent" (nudge nudge, wink wink) commission that the elected criminals created to legalize their annual theft.
And Second, the rolling back of the previous two raises. Or a minimum ten years before any further raises, AND future raises to be determined by citizen vote, never to exceed the average total income (including expense accounts, other benefits and retirement) in private industry.
Appeal to authority is a well known useful fallacy...
As are old recycled absurd totally discredited myths.

The bigger & stronger portion is known. The bones and ligament connections are a given fact of physics and levers.
Intelligence is, as noted, speculation based on size of skull.
