There is no way in hell that Chomsky doesn’t know the difference between the desire to do what’s best for one’s country, and being wrong about the best way to do that. Just because he thinks Trump’s policies aren’t actually best for the nation is logically irrelevant to whether or not Trump is a nationalist.

Not even a good try by Noam. He's claiming that Trump does not have the welfare of the nation in mind only because he disagrees with Trump concerning the nature of that welfare. It isn't even close to the same thing, and anyone whose field was once linguistics should be ashamed of that misrepresentation, especially since it's so easily caught.

We've had this discussion many times on FR. Nationalism gets a bad rap not because it is responsible for war, but because it stands in the way of world government, whether that be socialist, Communist, Nazi, or Islamic. The enemies of nationalism don't want peace, they want power.

I think the socialism part of National Socialism is the real bogeyman. Ww2 was a bloody world war but the killing and destruction caused by the Russian international socialists and the German National Socialists was a whole order greater than the Western Front.

All patriots are nationalists by definition.

There is a long, long literature on that. Some of it exaggerates the differences between the two. Some of it raises important questions about the relationship between patriotism and nationalism. You ought to read more before you make such a pat and unqualified identification of nationalism with patriotism.

Nationalism/Nationalist is the opposite of Globalism/Globalist.

So based on Trump’s actions on pulling out of bad international deals (Paris/Iran) that the prior globalist president got us into, just for the sake of being a global groupie, then yes, Trump is the opposite of a globalist - aka a nationalist - not to mention his many other nationalist policies on trade and immigration.
