Obviously it’s not. I don’t do military strategy. Do you? Maybe you can come up with an answer.

Why can’t we just burn the poppy fields?

... including the idea that Americans didn’t stumble into a forever war, but planned one all along.

Certainly a possibility.

No offense to anyone who has served in the U.S. military, but for the life of me I can't imagine why anyone would sign up to put his or her life on the line in a Third World sh!t-hole somewhere ... just because a bunch of @ssholes in Washington think it's a good idea.

Bush gave them warning to escape. The office workers & ordinary American citizens had no warning. Bush and the rest of the government had warning something was going to happen. Instead, Bush warned Osama and the rest of those in Afghanistan. We even changed the name of the campaign as it offended the muslims! We could have started bombing September 11 or 12. Instead, we warned them! Complete insanity.

No mention of Islam as the root of all their woes.

Meanwhile, the Taliban bide their time, as always.

Their benefactor Pahkeestahn remains as crazy as ever.

The mullahs of Tehran still breathe air.

Mecca is still on the map and not a mass of glazed sand.

...and we still play nation building games while allowing our nation to collapse into a borderless craphole.

I agree.

Leave!

If obama prolonged it, well trump has to stop it.

They said that it would be a “quagmire,” so we thought they wanted a quagmire. So we brought them a quagmire. ;-)

Anti-U.S. nations, don’t mess with the U.S.A. If you do, you will be caught in a quagmire forever. ;-D

Great! Don't mess with the U.S.A.! We're a quagmire--much worse than Vietnam! We're the worst quagmire on the planet, and we like it! Even Afhanistan is crying, "Uncle!" They want to get out of the American quagmire, but there's no way. We'll be close to them forever and ever, so they might as well become closer friends with us. ;-D
That's right, zanarchist. We don't want it here, and the efforts of our soldiers and other military people in Afghanistan are seeing to it. I'm very thankful to them.

You can end a war immediately, by losing it.

But another view is, what do we expect to achieve? You can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear. You can’t create a western style republic from a ninth century culture. And, I think that was the goal going in. Who knows what the goal is now. But nothing there is worth an American soldier’s life. What other ways are there to achieve America’s goals, whatever they are? (And, maybe, the better of the bad options is an eternal, unwinnable war there over terrorism here.)

“Lets be kinda honest...the ‘17 year’ thing mentioned....is not when the real war started. You need to go back to 1979 when the Russians invaded and created the environment rich in thug-ism. You can go back to the 1960s and 1970s to see a lot going on....western capital showing up in Kabul...and even some tourism starting to show up. Next year will be forty freaking years of an unending war. They are right to be frustrated, but there’s a ton of blame to throw around.”

Blame it on Alexander the Great. He should have finished the job....

Didn't we just have another guy killed by a 'friendly' Afghan a few days ago?

I'm at the point of, kill them all, let Allah sort it out.

The only difference between the Afghan war and the Vietnam war is the draft.

In both wars we have a greater enemy outside of the country that needs to be destroyed. (Vietnam - Communism, Afghanistan - Islam) Vietnam was a defensive “take territory and lose territory” game. I see no difference with Afghanistan. Both wars use up our most precious resource, those that serve, as well as gobble up millions of dollars with nothing to show for in the end.

Bring back the draft and suddenly American support for the current wars would reverse to massive protestants and soon the US Congress would defund the war and the Taliban would take over after we pulled out.

It’s a mess. We need an exit strategy where we can pull out. I do not agree with the Afghans for blaming us, but what else can they think after 17 years?

Over a trillion dollars wasted.

Over 2300 US casualties KIA to date.

Nation building? Pfft.

...and when we do finally disengage from that Islamic tribal sh*thole, it will revert back to the same tribal sh*thole it’s been since Alexander the Great showed up.

Not ONE of those crazy islamists are worth a single American life or dollar.

G. W. Bush foolishly prolonged it, by sending in troops with entirely untenable rules of engagement which were guaranteed at the outset not to achieve any lasting results of any sort.

Which was pointed out at the time.

There is nothing or no one in Afghanistan worth the life of one US soldier. The war there is a waste of US lives & tax dollars.

Adopting Afghanistan as a nation we should support & defend is like taking in to your home a rabid dog: the dog will die anyway while what you get in return is disease & death.

Or, just get out and let them kill each other. They seem to be pretty good at that.
