As federal employees braced for their first missed paychecks starting Friday, tension over the government shutdown reached a fever pitch, with House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer equating forcing people to work without pay to slavery.

Speaking Thursday to a rally of unionized federal employees and their supporters outside the AFL-CIO’s headquarters, the Maryland Democrat spoke of the “440,000 people that are being asked to work with no pay,” adding, “You know, back in the 1860s,they talked about working with no pay.”

The Democrats were at fault. Both times.

They’ve been paid without working many times, so the reverse seems only fair.

They should go on strike.

We gain twofer on that.

1. We find out for sure how many are not needed.
2. We find out how many can be replaced by the private sector.

Most of them hardly work anyway. Spend most of their time at the office goofing off or surfing for porn.

“You know, back in the 1860s, they talked about working with no pay.”

You're an idiot, Hoyer. Read Time on the Cross by Robert Fogel and Stanley Engerman. Maybe even you will learn something.

Except slaves didn’t have Unions. They worked longer and harder than any Federal employee ever did for zero dollars, and they didn’t get back wages when work started up again. Nor did they have medical, dental, or vision care whether they were working or not.

Hoyer is a commie. That said, I am not wild about forcing people to work w/o pay. That is not a conservative value. If a person does their job, they are entitled to be paid an honest wage, on time. If an employer is not keeping their end of that bargain then the workers have fair grounds for complaint.

You are paying them with debt notes. That is worse than being a slave. You are paying them in slaves.

They are just mad cause they wasted all those union dues on trying to get hillary elected, now they got nothing to pay out to their members.

Hilarious.

Any of them can quit whenever they wish. They don’t even have to make a phone call to do it.

Just stay home.

As federal employees braced for their first missed paychecks starting Friday, tension over the government shutdown reached a fever pitch, with House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer equating forcing people to work without pay to slavery.

As a furloughed Federal Employee (DOT), I've been watching with great amusement the horror stories on the local news of Feds having to deal with having to go without a pay check.

My congress critter Steny Hoyer is full of it. I have no sympathy for my fellow Feds who failed to plan for the shutdown. They knew this was coming.

Any Fed who failed to plan for a lengthy shutdown was not paying attention, is a fool, and deserves the pain resulting from the shutdown.

Conventional wisdom, like common sense which is sorely lacking in this day and age, dictates you should have at least 3-4 months of cash available for contingencies.

So you think it’s fair to tell someone to either work w/o pay or quit? Since when did that kind of thing become a conservative value? If someone is putting in an honest day’s work they are entitled to be paid an honest wage... on time. Hoyer is a commie. But that doesn’t make this right. These are real people with bills to pay. I don’t know many grocery stores that are taking IOUs.

They are getting earfuls from union reps who take their big
Paychecks out of union worker paychecks.

If they don’t like it they can quit. It would be better for everyone if they did.

The conservative value is to have at least a couple months living expenses in savings.
