‘twas but a modest suggestion ...
I’d bet a lot of money that the family was Hasidic.
Rockland County has a large Hasidic community and they have large families.
None of the news reports I have seen have identified the family - probably to avoid having to report on an illegal-minority-on-white hate crime.
Smokers are assholes.
I agree with your remark. The father wasn’t street smart enough to take a real look at that creep and just get his family the heck away.
You don’t take on a creep like that with your family in tow. You get away.
That said, that guy is a true psycho and deserves the death penalty. Probably won’t happen because NY likes it criminals alive and able to vote.
Story is light on details. Was the crazy guy smoking outside and someone didn’t know when to get off their high horse and triggered crazy guy?
What an inappropriate comment. You, sir, are a complete jerk!
How, exactly, was the father supposed to know this would “set him off”? It’s a very reasonable request to ask someone not to blow smoke on your child.
You’re advocating that we simply give in to evil - real or imagined.
“What an inappropriate comment. You, sir, are a complete jerk!”
I’d say it’s about 50/50 here as to whether my pointing out that there apparently were other options he could have taken without risking a violent response.
People are crazy.
Engage them at your own peril.
O rly?
Some of them are polite, and keep the effluent from their drug habit away from normal folk.
No not mormans. Kiyas Joel Hasidic community is 7 miles from Washingtonville.
Does anyone else remember Mario Cuomo dancing on the stage with them on 60 minutes right before the election that he lost?
Hey guys. Im known to have a big mouth. You should be able to say what you want. Its a free country right. Unfortunately there are many crazies out there. Look at rage over parking spaces. A woman is dead. 8 kids have no mother. I’m sure the father would gladly take back his request if only he could.
So your suggestion is to go through life in silence and fear because some asshole might turn out to be a lunatic.
Nope. I pick my fights. I ask myself “Is it worth a fist fight or worse? If it isnt the mouth stays shut. Consequently my wife would not be dead and my children would not have suffered the trauma of seeing her slaughtered.
I find your use of the words “some asshole” in THIS story interesting to say the least. Are you some kind of uncompromising tough guy who thinks getting the family mowed down is worth being dismissive of assholes?
Yes, it was avoidable
This was in front of a 7-11, not an enclosed space.
The best (& safest) option would have been to take the kids to another area in front of the store instead of a confrontation.
Hindsight wont change what happened to them, but should serve as a warning to others
Very true.
“How, exactly, was the father supposed to know this would set him off? Its a very reasonable request to ask someone not to blow smoke on your child.”
I guess you can flip that around and ask why the father thought he could safely tell someone he doesn’t know to stop smoking. In the case of family, friends, co-workers, etc., what dad did was fine in most cases, and if there is a nutcase in dad’s circle, dad would know NOT to set him off. Obviously dad made an assumption about this guy - and he guessed wrong. He didn’t need to guess as there (apparently) other options available to him.
Just like you do not make eye contact on a NYC subway.
