India's foreign ministry has confirmed that one of its air force's Mikoyan MiG-21 fighters has been shot down amid escalating tensions with its neighbour, Pakistan.
In a televised statement, a foreign ministry official said Pakistan had launched an incursion into Indian airspace "targeting military installations" in the disputed region of Kashmir on 27 February.
"But due to our high state of readiness and alertness, Pakistan's attempts were foiled successfully. The Pakistan air force was detected and the Indian air force responded immediately."
During the aerial engagement that followed, one aircraft from each side was shot down, the official says.
"The Pakistani aircraft was seen by ground forces falling from the sky on the Pakistan side [of the border]," he says.
Pakistan claims to have captured the Indian pilot – identified on social media as Wing Commander Abhi Nandan – and to have also shot down another aircraft.
New Delhi is "still ascertaining the facts" in the case, the foreign ministry official says.
Islamabad's action was a retaliation for air strikes conducted the previous day by India against alleged militant training camps on the Pakistani side of the border.

Nuclear war is not likely. Pakistan had to acquire nukes to counteract the bigger military of India and after India went nuclear in 1974. The Mullah’s are crazy but not suicidal. Have you ever seen a Mullah wearing suicide belt? Nope, they send brainwashed youngsters instead.
Might as well use a MiG 21 as anything new. Most third world countries air wars are really just a variant of WWI in fast jets.
They don’t really operate in the coordinated and disciplined way a US or Israeli force would.
A classic example of this was the Iranian F-14s against Iraq. Those battles were swirling dogfights, all guns, all daytime, always.
So if you are stuck in 1965 tactics wise and tech wise, you might as well be in a MiG 21 as anything else.

It’s been done. In 1965 we gave a bunch of F-104s to Pakistan ( apparently we kinda have a problem in that regard ). One shot down a much older Indian plane in the first kill by a Mach 2 plane.

Read about Vietnam pilots fighting them in much more modern Phantoms. The MiG 21 is a very small and hard to see aircraft, it’s extremely fast and maneuverable within it’s envelope. Armed with cannons and the Russian knock off Sidewinder.
It shouldn’t shoot down an F-16...if the 16 pilot doesn’t get complacent or cocky.

#8. Why not use MIG 21’s. They were a good plane, esp. if they had good pilots and missiles.
We had A1E Skyraiders shoot down MIG 21’s in Vietnam. The pilots put on their air brakes and the MIGS shot right past them, getting an American missile up their ass.
Not fun having Muslim neighbors.

I very much agree. The PAC JF-17 Thunder, an updated version of the Mig-21, ought to be the sensible choice for many third world air forces rather then wasting big bucks on a front line aircraft they cannot maintain properly nor fully utilize the plane’s capabilities.
the whole Pakistan thing is a mystery , seems like they should be beat back into submission by a US backed coalition air hammering
