“It’s the poor and middle class who are departing.”

And after living there a few years, those rich folks will be joining them.

I always trust but verify. :-)

I also suspect that the newspaper, if not the authors of the research, are conflating wealth and income.

I posted a link to the 42 page paper. Folk can read it and see what they think. I find it very telling that the LAT didn’t provide a link to the paper.

So I guess they’ll have no trouble paying for the Oroville Dam repairs.

Also, they have no need to bitch that Trump pulled the remainder of federal contribution to the "bullet train to nowhere."

But thanks to Trump, they won’t have to spend more billions on a stupid high speed rail project!

Trump helping to save California in spite of itself!

Lucky them. I live in a blue state that won’t get “that kind of help”.

Probably its due to the cheap workforce that can't speak English to the nosy journalists trying to investigate modern slavery. Or, it could just be a massive lie, a whistling past the graveyard, a regurgitation of DNC talking points by one or more partisan media shills.

It’s simple: the much of the entertainment industry and the technology industry are all based on California. And California’s generally has way milder winters than most of the rest of the USA.

I remember hearing a court case where a Military Retire Person (CA resident) move to Oregon for cheaper taxes on his pension back in the 1988/89 timeframe.

CA wanted to tax his pension because he earn it while being a resident of CA. Not sure if they are trying stuff like that still.

They were pushing CA resident when I was station there, offering free college. I did not take it, decided the taxes were to high. Glad I did not declare resident there.

You are only looking at the budget. You have forgotten about the $500 Billion to $1 Trillion underfunded liability to retired government workers pension plans.

A $10 Billion budget surplus, which will end up being spent on government boondoggles and be rapidly vaporized. Poof!

It is not just fire hazard. It is the smoke/air pollution it adds.

It is similar to the ban of the older wood stoves in some areas of the country especially if you are located in a valley surrounded by mountains. I think this is an issue in SLC.

“The state budget has nearly $10bil in surplus, and that’s after socking away the required rainy day fund allocation.”

So why do the roads and highways look like something out of Paraguay?

People are continually moving into California that can afford it. If you make $250K you can probably afford it. If you do not you probably can’t. If I could afford to live at Pebble Beach, I would. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

People are also moving out when they do not have an income and want to retire. Sell your bungelow in California and buy a mansion in most other places or a water front house elsewhere.

California used to tax all retirement income from inside the state even if the person moved out of state. It was ruled unconstitutional many many years ago.

CA wanted to tax his pension because he earn it while being a resident of CA. Not sure if they are trying stuff like that still.

SCOTUS deep-sixed that practice back in the 90's. The case involved New York State which was hunting down retirees in Florida to collect their cut.

You nailed it. It's a pretty short distance from the eight-figure homes of Malibu to the easy to see tent cities in Santa Monica.

California really is turning into a third world country, and this fate awaits the rest of the country if we're stupid enough to follow their lead.

It’s called “Socialism “.
Karl Marx HATED the middle class.

He wanted them GONE.

But middle class Marxists just love their Socialism.
