On May 15, 2018, under a sunny sky, Russian President Vladimir Putin drove a bright orange truck in a convoy of construction vehicles for the opening of the Kerch Bridge from Russia to Crimea. At 11 miles long, it is now the longest bridge in either Europe or Russia.
As Putin drove across the bridge, something weird happened. The satellite navigation systems in the control rooms of more than 24 ships anchored nearby suddenly started displaying false information about their location. Their GPS systems told their captains they were anchored more than 65 kilometres away on land, at the Anapa Airport.
This was not a random glitch, according to the Centre for Advanced Defense, a security think tank. It was a deliberate plan to make it difficult for anyone nearby to track or navigate around the presence of Putin, C4AD says.
The Russians have started hacking into the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) on a mass scale in order to confuse thousands of ships and airplanes about where they are, according to a study of false GNSS signals by C4AD.

But I'll go back and read it again.
I would hope our systems give misleading data on where the president is located. 100 km is outside the blast radius...
Video - or it didn’t happen ...
Just sayin.
Correct.
Whoops...I’m wrong.
Let's be real....spying is an international past time.
And I believe both Clapper and Brennan were caught "spying" on American citizens. They apologized and that was that.
Selective Availability. Collecting GPS data prior to 2000 required differential correction. US Air force spent millions introducing error and coast guard spent millions removing error.
I’m still very suspicious of those Navy accidents...granted we probably have incompetents but many people could have stopped them.....they all can’t be incompetent...
GNSS is the combination of ALL the global systems including our GPS. Some receivers can use them all.
The Russians claim they can spoof them all. It is quite easy to accomplish for the civilian networks since the signals have no encryption.
However, US military GPS is on multiple frequencies and encrypted. It has protections for spoofing and the Russians do not claim they hacked that side of the system.
I suppose with powerful enough jammers they could also block military GPS but spoofing is another story.
One day we were out, two of us had Garmin 45s...(years ago)....and wham...the system shut down. We had to reboot the whole thing.
Inertial navigation systems are harder to need with. Stellar system also.
Mittens will not be surprised.
This was so predictable. GPS is a false God .It is easily jammed and easily overridden more powerful signals. We are way overdependent on GPS
Even the military GPS signal is relatively weak. Critical military systems have adaptive antennas that can block jammers, and back up inertial navigation systems to get them through temporary GPS outages.
What the Russians are doing is just silly and paranoid. Ignore them.
Why? Its well documented and easy to jam GPS signals. Spoofing, to make false location information appear is just a iittle more complicated.
Ten bucks on ebay.

Dude, no worries! Just find your way around with a sextant and a Nautical Almanac. The new 2019 is already available!
I don’t find BI a very reliable source.
