Fed Workers Literally Turn Backs On Agriculture Secretary After Being Told They're Moving To Kansas

Imagine being told to do an assignment by your boss and instead of following orders or having a conversation about why you cannot complete the job, you simply stood up and turned your back on him. You would probably be fired, right? Well, not if you work for the federal government. Yesterday, a group of federal employees literally stood up and turned their backs on Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue after being told they would be relocated to Kansas.

The Hill reports that Sec. Perdue "announced Thursday that two of the Department of Agriculture’s research agencies, the Economic Research Service (ERS) and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, will be relocated to be closer to major farming regions."

In response, the employees expressed their dissatisfaction by treating Sec. Perdue like a misbehaved dog and shunning him.

Should have closed with: "Those choosing to not relocate may pick up your final check within the next two weeks."

Fire everyone of these eff-holes. Maybe with the department in KS they’ll employ people who know something about agriculture and not just about bureaucracy.

Insubordination is one of the things that is virtually an automatic firing.

IF I had done that to my boss, I’d be out of a job in less than 10 minutes. Maybe they’re a protected species by some govt regulation or union, but they need to be GONE....either to Kansas or permanently out the door.

I hope they’re made to use cheap old furniture in cubicles barely big enough for a desk and chair in a poorly lit windowless building with poor ventilation.

Are these entrenched government workers that can’t be fired? There should be no public sector unions.

Kansas or study agriculture in ANtartica. They’ll pick Kansas. Yes, the Fed Gov CAN do that.

“...The employees, who opted to unionize after the announcement, were supposedly given their reassignments yesterday and now have 30 days to decide whether or not they will continue working for the department....”

Wow, after looking at the picture at the linked site, I suspect the nation will be better off should many of them NOT decide to continue “working” for the department.

Sure, in the real world. But do you think federal employees live in the real world? I’m sure they know exactly how much they can get away with before running the risk of any repercussions. So they turned their backs and then went back to their offices to watch porn.

Their locality pay will be cut in half. It will decrease costs now and in the future when they retire. Facility costs will be reduced too. Good move.

Not all negative for the employees, if the have a house in the DC area, they will spend a third less buying the equivalent in Kansas.

Relocation is always a possibility when you’re a Fed. My friend’s husband is being relocated from Virginia to Huntsville, Alabama. My friend works for a different agency where there are no jobs available.

He could choose not to go, and he would be free to seek employment elsewhere. He understands it.

These folks need to grow up.

In this case, once the agency decision has been made...the government is signing up to move the worker (moving cost, transportation cost, etc). It also means that if the guy’s house/condo hasn’t been sold within a reasonable amount of time, the government would have the power (responsibility) to sign for it, and market it....paying a fair amount for the property.

For some of these folks, they’ve been in the DC area for twenty-plus years...happy with their house...and might have kids in local schools. Their attitude is that it’s unfair. As their move-date comes up...if they don’t sign the acceptance deal...they will be let go, and paid an exit sum of money. If they take up another federal job in DC...they have to pay the exit sum back.

I saw this around seven years ago with one particular agency which people thought they could find jobs in DC as their agency left, and the shock was that they had a reputation (negative) and no government agency were offering jobs. So they reverted, and took the move.

I will add that a fair sum of the GS-14/15 managers see Kansas City as the end of the world, where no civilization or culture exists. Having been there years ago for three weeks, I would suggest otherwise, and that it’s a bit more safer than DC, and plenty to do on weekends. I wouldn’t have a problem moving unless the new building was some structure in bad shape, and it was next to some bad part of town.

I had the same response as many of you.

If they want to stay in DC resign. I am sure that there are much more energetic people who would love their position in KC. How can they be on the pulse of the farming industry in DC? What grows in DC besides corruption?

Sonny is a nice man.

“IF I had done that to my boss, I’d be out of a job in less than 10 minutes”

Your boss must be very lenient and understanding.
With my boss, I’d have a boot print on my butt within the first minute.
