Joel McNally: What’s the difference between Tommy Guns and assault weapons? ----(barf alert)
Cap Times ^ | 25 aug 2019 | Joel McNally

Here’s an important question for our times: What’s the difference between a Tommy Gun, the submachine gun wielded by gangsters like John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson roaming Wisconsin in the 1930s, and a military-style assault weapon, today’s weapon of choice routinely used to commit mass murders all over America?

The answer, of course, is there’s virtually no difference, except for this: President Franklin Roosevelt and the U.S. Congress succeeded in removing Thompson submachine guns, firing 600 rounds of bullets in a minute, from city streets with the National Firearms Act of 1934, the first serious federal gun safety legislation ever passed to protect American lives.

I’m guessing a Cobra gunship with belt-fed ammo can probably reach 800+ actual rounds down-range in a minute. (Just a guess.)

So it seems that us civilians need some catching up to do! (And don’t even get me started on the rockets!)

"But 600 rounds in 60 seconds?
Sort of like saying a car that can reach 60 mph in 5 seconds will get to 720 mph in a minute."

Your post is exactly correct, but there was a "C type" drum that held 100 rounds.

Much of what the liberal believes and spouts off about is a view into their mind.

They don’t care about the failure and uselessness of gun laws or that criminals are not affected by gun laws. Technical data is irrelevant.

The one thing that the liberal knows about guns - is what they would do with one.

A Joel McNally article on FreeRepublic? The Barf Alert is assumed.

Joel McNally was too leftist for even the Milwaukee Urinal Sentinel. He is a regular on the Shepard Express, a local bird cage liner.

You can still buy a Tommy Gun... that operates just like an AR-15, one trigger pull = one round down range.

You actually can buy the fully auto version of either. It requires a federal tax and you are scrutinized by the feds. But you can still buy them

When it comes to guns and the Second Amendment, those who wish a disarmed population are not interested in facts or logic.

From The Truth About Guns

There is a simple way to understand the thinking of most people who want you disarmed.

Make the internal assumption, for the sake of understanding them, that you have deliberately chosen to be unarmed. It isn’t that hard to do. Being armed requires effort. You have to choose to be responsible. You have to practice self-discipline. You adopt safe gun handling practices and you train. You think about unpleasant possibilities and plan for them. In many states, becoming armed takes considerable legal effort. You have to devote time and money to be being a gun owner.

Once the decision has been made to be unarmed, many of their reactions to gun owners become understandable. Unarmed people are often uncomfortable around those of us who own and carry guns. Armed people have a significant power advantage over unarmed people. Many unarmed people don’t want to be reminded that armed people have that power. To avoid this, they want to force other people to be disarmed.

That explains why some unarmed people dislike concealed carry, but absolutely hate open carry. Open carry forces them to confront the power differential they have chosen. It reminds them of an unpleasant reality and they feel intimidated.

People are more accepting of information that reinforces their personal choices. If you’ve chosen to be unarmed, you want to hear news items that validate that choice. If a health professional tells you that keeping or bearing arms makes you less safe in your home and on the street, you will have an intrinsic bias toward believing them.

(snip)

If you have chosen to be unarmed, you probably don’t have much knowledge about firearms and how they work. Learning and knowing about guns is one of the costs that people avoid by choosing to be unarmed. When gun owners point out technical mistakes in articles and legislation concerning guns, it strikes the unarmed as meaningless, pedantic babble. Semi-automatic, automatic…who cares? You are not interested in guns, so technical distinctions are beside the point.

The media and politicians do that deliberately. Many people think an “assault rifle” is a machine gun, and you can just go to a gun show and buy full-auto rifles just like the military has no questions asked. What they want to do is confuse people and ban every modern semi-auto rifle that exists. And then they will discover a “loophole” they will say ban semi-auto handguns. And then ban revolvers and bolt-action rifles, because they are “repeating” and were also “weapons of war.” It doesn’t end.

"We better come up with a better argument to keep semi-automatic weapons than “they’re not full auto.”"

Umm.., the founding fathers did that. When they wrote the second amendment the intent was not for hunting or even crime prevention, it is to protect the people from government tyranny. They knew that governments are the greatest danger to freedom. Perhaps they were thinking of the British government primarily, but they knew even our government could become currupted.

What crap. Gangsters still had machine guns. That law was not that effective. People still kept their machine guns. Up until 1968, you could pay the $200 anytime and register a machine gun. It took until 1986, when Reagan signed the transfer ban of new machine guns, that new machine guns were banned.

By the way, I’ve shot a Thompson. In a firefight, I’d rather have my AR-15s.

One can still buy a tommy gun - 20 or 30 rounds with one trigger pull. Just fill out the paperwork and pay the tax.

I’m FAR from sure that the real answer is not: ALL OF THE ABOVE.

In All too many cases, I suspect it’s a case of WILLFUL IGNORANCE and/or, “Don’t confuse me with facts, as my mind is made up.”

I believe for a great number of the “gun control advocates” that they are really little different than a confirmed racist, who stoutly says that “- - - the _______________ (pick any unfavored group) are just naturally inferior to good people like me.”

Semi-automatic vs fully automatic.

Huge difference.

Oddly enough, MANY “gun control advocates” want to limit everyone’s access to firearms, with the exception of the financial/social/government elites & their hired bodyguards.
(Senator Diane Feinstein got caught with an illegal pistol in Washington, DC & told the Metro Police Officer, who had seen the revolver laying on the car-seat, “I don’t have to obey the laws. I’m a US Senator.”)

I’m NOT a “VIP” (& never will be) but my lady & my daughter are just as important to me as anybody else on Planet Earth is.

“Many unarmed people don’t want to be reminded that armed people have that power. To avoid this, they want to force other people to be disarmed.”

I’ve been legally carrying concealed firearms for a little over 2 years here in Illinois. And as a bit of an amateur student of human behavior I’ve made some fairly interesting observations. When people don’t know I’m armed “normal” interactions occur. Now I certainly do not make it a point to let people know I’m carrying. Discretion is paramount in my view.

When it does come up in conversation most people think it’s no big deal although I’ve noticed that men and women tend to have different reactions. A large percentage of men will say something like “I should get my permit.” Or they’ll ask me about the process, what kind of gun I favor, that sort of thing.

Some women have, too. But that reaction mostly comes from men.

Only one man that I can remember has said that he was uncomfortable being around me when he learned I regularly carry. I told him he was free to leave any time he wished. Interestingly enough he didn’t.

Women, however, tend to have a very different set of reactions. “Are you carrying right now?” is asked almost 100% of the time. They will raise their eyes, lower their voices when they do it.

My response is always the same. “Concealed means just that. You won’t know for sure unless something really bad happens. But if you do happen to see it you will want to get really small really fast. Getting behind something sturdy would probably be a very good idea, too.”

I do NOT qualify as something sturdy.

What’s even more interesting to me is the way women’s behavior toward me will change. They tend to stay just a bit closer for just a bit longer. Some will make subtle but obvious expressions of sexual interest. It’s like they know an Alpha dog when they see one. Pretty amusing, actually. If I were single I might take advantage of that.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences.
