Boris Johnson has issued a fresh warning to MPs tempted to try to block a no-deal Brexit, with a senior government official insisting “politicians don’t get to choose which public votes they respect”.

Speaking in Biarritz, where Johnson met the European council president, Donald Tusk, on Sunday, the UK official said Johnson had delivered the message to EU leaders that Brexit cannot be stopped.

politicians don’t get to choose which public votes they respect...

What a novel idea! We should try that here in the States.

He’s talking tough now but let’s see what he does when the IRA threatens to start bombing again over the Ireland border issues. I have my doubts Boris will stand firm there in the end.

What should have been invoked is rebus sic stantibus, since that would make the entire sick treaty invalid.

Ever read Article 50? It gives all the advantage to the EU when it comes to negotiations like this. There was no Article 50 in the treaties when Greenland voted to leave the EU (then the EEC)—not that they truly are out of the EU due to their connections with Denmark and thus being one of that empire’s “overseas countries and territories”.

While I hope the UK crashes out with a no-deal hard Brexit on 31 October, Boris is legally wrong -- in the UK parliament is sovereign - it can decide by holding a vote of no-confidence to topple the BoJo cabinet and then put in an interim cabinet that calls for a delay.

However
1. the clock is ticking - the window in which the opposition can do this gets smaller and smaller each day
2. the opposition isn't sure they want to do this - Corbyn and the communists for instance WANT a hard Brexit as they believe they can then implement a communist state in the chaos
3. Just as LEAVE is divided into hard and soft brexit; REMAIN is divided into soft and no Brexit. No one has the majority
It would be a shame if the crash didn't happen on 31.October.2019 -- all of the EU is waiting and hoping and praying that the UK doesn't come up with a last minute beg to remain; they really can't wait for the UK to make up it's mind and leave

Except the North would be with the UK to leave, and the South would (theoretically) stay in the EU and have some sort of “border”.

The UK IS the first member of the EU to invoke Article 50.

That could work to the UK’s advantage if their government is serious about bugging.

Looks to me like nobody’s got the nads to do anything other than handwring.

In this case, that might not be such a bad thing.

Article 50 was drafted by the British in 2004 and proposed and accepted
