The United States and Afghan governments took their first step in ending the almost two decade war with the Taliban on Saturday by signing a peace agreement and a joint declaration to take U.S. troops out of Afghanistan.
The withdrawal agreement was signed after a "reduction in violence" agreement was in effect between the two sides. The plan is to now have both sides come to the table to enact a permanent ceasefire and enable conditions to allow U.S. troops to completely leave Afghanistan in 14 months.
The "reduction in violence" agreement only applies to the Taliban and not Al-Qaeda or the ISIS militants operating in Afghanistan.

> Actually, they [the Japanese in 1945] were near the breaking point. <
True enough. But without both A-bombs they still would not have surrendered.
> The principal reason this war is dragging on is because we havent taken the gloves off. <
I certainly agree with that. And thats 100% on Bush II. Right after 9/11 the entire West was with us. America was united. NATO was ready to be activated. But instead of total war, Bush decided to go with a mushy blend of police-action and nation-building while the Taliban was still unbroken.
But wait. It gets worse. Bush then decided to invade Iraq. That would be as if FDR decided to invade Russia soon after Pearl Harbor. Bush II did perhaps irreparable harm to this country. He can go straight to... (I better stop here).
> It will be strictly an open killing season, after were gone. <
Right. The Taliban will roll into Kabul just like the NVA rolled into Saigon back in 1975. But there will be two big differences.
1. The North Vietnamese sent South Vietnamese collaborators to re-education camps. The Taliban will simply kill the Afghan collaborators.
2. The North Vietnamese did not plot any attacks against America after the war ended. The Taliban will not be so pleasant. Islam demands it.
They’ll be as peaceful as a fake Palestinian.

No president could, even before the Geneva conventions. The Chinese can and the Russians can. But we can’t.

If we expelled the Pashtun plurality to Pakistan, the Taliban would probably die with their departure. But current mores mean no President could issue such an order, and expect to have it obeyed. So we muddle on.
The Vietnamese were ethnically pretty much the same except for the Chinese in Cholon. So there were too many family connections to cause a violent purge.
..........
Afghanis are majority Pakhtun (Sunni) or Hazara (Shia) in the north.
..........
The two ethnicities are very different. It will be a bloodbath.
The taliban has already said the deal is dead after Paki said they would not release their 5000 talibanned terrorists!
Why can’t we just get the hell out of there andlet them kill each other.
Hey pakistan, how’s those NUKES working out for you? Is it time to send them to India where they will be safe:-)
Yes he did.
I’m saying that if they break the peace treaty he’s likely to kill them.
The historical record supports my theory.
“It will be an open killing season, after we’re gone”.
I don’t have a problem with that, they can kill each other all they want for as long as they want, as far as I’m concerned.
If they attempt to kill, or kill, or plot to kill any Americans, then all restrictive ROE’s are off.
Kill everything with a pulse, salt their ground and poison their wells, burn the entire country to the ground, leave nothing but a fine gray ash.
last thought; Go William T. Sherman on them, make them howl for peace, make war so hard on them that they will never want to fight again.
We’ve been at war with them for 3 years. Why didn’t he kill them then?
Obviously my trust level in President Trump is higher than yours.
