New Yorkers fleeing to Florida to avoid coronavirus lockdown, DeSantis says

More than 1.5 billion people around the world have been asked or ordered to stay home to slow the spread of coronavirus, but Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is refusing to do the same -- and pointing to New York as a reason why.

The Tampa Bay Times reports DeSantis said Monday that New Yorkers are fleeing the state and flocking to Florida to avoid NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s stay-at-home order, a near lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If you look at what happened in New York, when they did the stay at home order, what did people do?” DeSantis said. “Well, a lot of people fled the city. ... We’re getting huge amounts of people flying in.”

Cuomo ordered all New York state residents to stay home starting Sunday night, with few exceptions, to slow the spread of coronavirus. Most businesses have to send 100 percent of their workers home. Those that stay open, such as grocery stores and pharmacies, must ensure customers stay at least six feet apart; restaurants can still offer drive-thru and takeout food. Gatherings are banned, including house gatherings. Vulnerable people need to stay indoors.

Other states that have similarly banned non-essential businesses or ordered residents to shelter in place include California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Ohio, Oregon, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

DeSantis said at a press conference Monday that he spoke to President Donald Trump on Sunday about Florida seeing an increase in travelers from New York.

“For every action, there’s a reaction,” DeSantis said. “We’re going to consider what makes sense for Florida.”

Trump has largely left states to decide how to respond to coronavirus, but said Sunday he may make a decision at the end of a “15-day period” next week.

Tell me about it. We left our winter home in Fort Lauderdale on Friday and 8 out of every 10 cars on I95 was from Quebec. I shouldn’t use the word cars ,they were actually massive RVs.

We are “reverse snowbirds” (”skibirds”?). Since Christmas, Mrs. POF was planning to fly to Idaho on March 19 to go skiing for a week. On March 16, the “Shelter in Place” order was announced for six San Francisco Bay Area Counties to take effect the following day. She cancelled her flight, grabbed the dog, and bugged out to Idaho just as the order was taking effect.

People going NORTH in winter? That IS a shockah.

Dare County is taking your advice. Haven't blown the bridges or called in the A-10s yet, but the week is still young.

Dare County, North Carolina is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 33,920. Its county seat is Manteo. The county is named after Virginia Dare, the first child born in the Americas to English parents, who was born in what is now Dare County.

They are blocking ingress and egress to the county.

Why? Because he’s not locking down the state the way the liberal governors are?

Because Florida is full of elderly people who, according to health professionals, are the most at-risk group. Because although the stores are designating a special time for the elderly to shop, they can’t prevent the younger from shopping at that time and that is exactly what is happening. Left to their own devices, a majority of people will not act accordingly. Because although many snowbirds from the winter season have left, many have not and now we’re adding even more. Should there be a large outbreak, our hospitals would be pushed beyond capacity. And on a purely selfish note, I fail to see why Florida needs an extra dose of the virus.

As for your question re: our President, what “order” are you saying he’s going to modify? I fail to see how my displeasure with DeSantis’ lackluster approach translates to some problem with our President. Trump = Federal, DeSantis = State. IMHO, President Trump has acted accordingly, allowing the States to make the decisions that make sense locally. On that note, are you a Floridian?

The bulk of Florida’s infections is in Dade and Broward counties which are already pretty much closed down. Half the counties in the state have only a small number of infections. So in DeSantis’s view, it doesn’t make sense to lock down the entire state and put the entire state out of work. Instead, the hot spots should get the focus as they pop up. That’s his philosophy.

And you can’t lock the entire state (or country) down for weeks and months. People are not going to follow it. It’s not feasible. Every state that has “shelter in place” orders are right now struggling with enforcement. Because they bit off more than they can chew. We don’t have the manpower to lockdown areas this large. You can get the national guard to lock down a city or two. But if you say we need to lock down the entire state....they are going to be stretched thin and not know where to start.
