I had to make a decision as Clinic OIC. I had 30 medics and 4 or 5 Captain MDs that worked for me. We did Military Sick Call at 0600 every morning. We would get over 100 people (soldiers) sign up for sick call by 0600. As you know, The Mission” is to get every single one of them seen and back to their unit by 0730. 90% success is the goal.

The problem with that was my guys couldn’t go to PT because those were the hours the Army does PT. I didn’t want my people to struggle with the PT fitness test. So when could they do PT? I called the COl ad explained my plan, exempt my people from morning PT so we could meet the mission requirements and in exchange I would close the clinic MWF at 1500. My guys would do PT for an hour three times a week. In the parking lot. In Panama. I was there every time. My NCO loved torturing me. As a MD with “Silver Wings” no way was I going to let those wings down. If they were sweating, I was sweating. If they were in pain form running in place for ten minutes, I was, too.

In those days rating were inflated anyway but my Col. gave me “Top Block” every rating and consistently one sentence of text. “Gets it done.”

My wife is a school teacher. Every teacher knows you make or break the year on the first day. My approach was radically different than what I observed for most Officers. They all came in with “big ideas” they were going to “really shape things up”. (For their OER support form). That just sends the wrong message, it implies they didn’t know what they were doing before you got there, which is insulting and they have all seen this movie before and know it’s a crock.

My first day I promised everyone I wouldn’t change a thing for 6 weeks, so they could all relax. You could actually hear the sigh of relief. Then when I did propose a change I never said a thing until I had had a LONG conference with both of my head nurses and the woman who ran my chemistry lab who had been there for decades. Just about every proposal was met with, “Oh yeah. We tried that 15 years ago. It didn’t work.”

Saved me and my guys a LOT of heartburn. I did have changes imposed on me and couldn’t do anything about that, they did asbestos abatement on my entire clinic while we continued the mission.

So, the captain of a capital ship tells everyone but his immediate change n of command that he is non-mission capable, that 1/10 if our force projection platforms is dead in the water, and he’s a hero? Nah. He’s a pencil pusher now, soon to be retired.

There’s a reason it’s called a “chain” of command. It’s not a suggestion.

I do understand that his ship was in trouble, but he failed in a most obvious manner. What was the Roosevelt doing in the western Pacific, on a pleasure cruise? Or, protecting American interests.

Well stated.

Folks ought to review Worth’s Battalion Orders.

My relationship with the Army was very much “Love/Hate”. I loved the sense of accomplishment i managing a group of people toward a goal, the camaraderie, the regimentation. Being part of something that stretches back to our country’s founding, my ancestors who had served.

At the same time I was at the threshold of a 30 year career as a Neurosurgeon that I had worked VERY hard to attain and the Army wrecked that.. like with a wrecking ball and the Son of a Bitch in DC did it on purpose.

Absolutly NONE! This “warrior” deserves to be in Leavenworth for compromising the security of an entire carrier strike group!

He granted them all shore leave in Viet Nam a month ago so they could all go out and bring it back to the ship. Now its not his fault his crew is hobbled?

The only reason this story is news.

The Trump-hating media loved it all.

You write well and you clearly have excellent experience, so I'm surprised that you have come out against Captain Crozier in this affair.

I have never been aboard an aircraft carrier and the only flight I've had in an attack jet was one familiarization hop in a TAV-8B but I have spent a lot of time at sea in amphibs and surface combatants and some time as a commander - so I sympathize with Capt. Crozier and strongly distrust the motivations of those in his chain of command who let him and his crew down.

I read his 4-page letter and I didn't see anything remotely classified or even sensitive, since by the time the letter was published, everyone who could read a news article already knew that the Roosevelt had an outbreak of Covid aboard.

Captain Crozier had an excellent career path and great track record as a commander - so what would motivate him to take a chance on sending an UNCLASS e-mail? My guess is that his immediate commander was insisting on pushing ahead with the deployment and ignoring the rapid spread of the disease.

Actually 6,000. To run the ship it requires 3000. The other 3000 take care of the air group.

Thank you, that makes the 2-300 who cheered the moron Captain even more insignificant. They should be identified and retrained in the area of the Mission and its importance.

Liberals Hate the Military until one of them can make Trump look bad in their twisted minds. Sounds like his actions got his ship infected, then his 5 page letter leaks... Sounds like a Vindman type character..Good riddance...

Great handle, by the way -

but "What was the Roosevelt doing in the western Pacific, on a pleasure cruise? Or, protecting American interests.

But does "showing the flag" trump the sickness and possible death coming from a very infectious disease running loose in a closed environment? Do we have so many eager volunteers that we could throw away a few hundred aircraft, nuclear powerplant, operations, etc. specialists?

Nobody has had to deal with a biological threat aboard ship since the days of sail - so should I assume that you didn't have a son or a friend or anyone you remotely knew aboard the Roosevelt?
