The recently resigned acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modlys Monday trip to Guam where he addressed the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt and slammed their former commander, cost the Defense Department an estimated $243,000, according to a Navy official.
SNIP
Modly traveled to Guam aboard a C-37B VIP aircraft a modified Gulfstream jet. It costs $6,946.19 per hour to fly and the flight time for the Guam trip was about 35 hours for a total cost of $243,151.65.

The more the MSM pounds on Modly and defends Crozier, the more convinced I am that this Crozier is a connected San Fran Leftie who leaked to humiliate the military, and is now being turned into a folk hero and groomed for political office in the Pelosi sphere of influence.
Ha,ha. However, that is my position on this Navy debacle. From my research, the Captain had to have permission from further up Chain and they coordinate with the State Department for liberty ports. I doubt the Captain made the call, but he screwed up with the letter.
I keep asking if once he knew of the infection on board, if he notified his Admiral and/or CinCPacFleet before sending the letter. The acting Sec of Navy was beyond the pale in his remarks.
WTF happened to my professional Navy with this and 2 collisions with lumbering freighters? Political Correctness? Sub-standard training? In-fighting between the female OOD and the female commander of CIC on the Ferguson? What?
That is crazy. What is with this new “bash the military” thing among conservatives? Conservatives used to support the lives of those in the military.
I don’t know. The Army has changed quite a bit from my days in green so it’s not only the Navy!
As soon as the story hit the news I said he never should have gone outside the chain of command (San Francisco Chronicle - seriously?) and I would have felt that way regardless of what size ship, but my God, one of our deployed aircraft carriers?????? Seriously? There are strategic assets and then there are aircraft carriers!
Announcing to the world that the ship was mission ineffective on a personal email was way out of bounds for our national security, to his chain of command, and to the families of those sailors. His name ain’t Clinton and his email was a career ending event and he had to know that.
He was an idiot to go try to justify his order to the crew. You issue your order, and make sure its executed. Explaining your orders now, means that when the situation is very bad, they are then trained to always want an explanation.
Snapping that crew in the shape is the job of the new captain.
I guess he knew he had to do something, since the crew now knows he doesn’t care if they all die.
When you find yourself on the same side as those two, you better look about yourself. I guarantee you, this Crozier guy is not the good guy here.
I’d wager good money Modly is more likely to be a Democrat than Crozier.
Contract fuel for government aircraft is not $.77 a gallon. More in the 2.69 zone
Unless there are other reasons to be there in person, he could just used Skype to berate the Captain.
You nailed it.
SECNAV didnt need to go to the carrier. Thats why theres admirals, one of which happened to be on the carrier. Thats why you have other captains showing up for relief.
Modly is the one acting like a Democrat.
He could have use TikTok.
Our SECNAV shouldn’t be throwing an effeminate hissy fit that would embarrass a teenage girl. We can’t find someone with an ounce of testosterone for that job?
He certainly acts like someone who would use TikTok.
He doesn't ask permission. He is assigned ports of call by the operating command as part of his deployment mission, and in part is for diplomatic / foreign policy / show the flag reasons. Sailors in port spending money is part of that.
No, its completely inappropriate for the secretary of the Navy to think he has to go explain his decision to the crew of a ship just for removing a captain. No need for him to go vomit his explanations and reasons all over the crew. And the crew should be expected to follow orders without explanation.
The captain was not forced to allow liberty call.
