If they're going to monkey around with the rules, they should at least do an experiment with the rule change I would propose:

With each extra inning that goes by, each team must remove one player from the field.

If a batter was up in the top half of an extra inning, he cannot be the one removed from the field in the bottom half of the inning unless the team batted around and everyone in the lineup was up at least once in that inning. This goes on until only six batters remain in the lineup: five fielders plus the DH.

Sure -- it would look outlandish on the field and would completely change the game, but you're not likely to see too many games last beyond the 11th or 12th inning.

I have an idea, DUMP MLB for supporting the Marxist BLM, tell them why you are dumping them, and serve your closest patriot group and let that be your pastime.

I am a diehard baseball fan since I was a little tyke. But frankly with everything else going on this summer I just don’t give a damn. And if baseball players start politicking on the field I will be done with it completely.

I know. The pitching change limits they are putting in may not accomplish what they wanted. It seems to give a lot more worth to boring one dimensional power hitting lefties if you can’t bring in a lefty to face them in close games or with runners on.

No need to steal. First hitter will always bunt. Girls softball has been doing this for years at the youth level.

Once the players union figured out that they could get more dues out of a veteran DH than they could the 25th guy on the roster, they’ve been on a bent to make it universal. The high schools, colleges and minor leagues all use the DH now so pitchers never even get a chance to develop as hitters.

Some people say they think watching pitchers bat is boring. That simply tells me they don’t appreciate baseball. Would they want a “designated free thrower” to come in as a substitute for the team’s worst free throw shooter every time that player is fouled? Same principle.

But since the surge has reached this juncture, I will again bring forth the “compromise” rule I think gives us the best of both worlds. The DH is tied to the starting pitcher. When the starting pitcher is removed, so is the DH. That means games will start like American League games and end like National League games where pinch-hitters and double-switches matter.

It adds a whole new wrinkle of strategy as to whether managers will keep in a tiring starter because the DH would come up the next inning or whether to risk making your best hitter a DH since he probably won’t be around in the critical late innings.

Today’s A.L. I call “Whack-A-Mole” baseball. There’s no nuance. There’s no strategy. It’s just nine hitters slugging for the fences against a pitcher who tries to strike out every batter. That’s what all these egghead Ivy League general managers have given us. To me, it’s boring.

But the N.L. game, the REAL baseball, features strategy and manufacturing runs because you have to account for the pitcher’s spot in the lineup and the realization the pitcher’s spot can ruin your entire inning. So you have to advance runners, bunt guys over at times, steal bases and other lost arts that keep the strategy interesting.

With the compromise rule, pitchers would bat very infrequently. The starter wouldn’t hit and the relievers are usually replaced by a pinch-hitter with sometimes double-switches. It means more team participation beyond the first ten players.

I will mourn the day when the DH becomes universal, as it will probably happen because the players are greedy and the owners care about dollars, not the good of their sport. MLB may be on its last legs if they drive away fans of REAL baseball, not the Whack-a-mole variety.

How does pitchers not hitting make the games take longer? In baseball, generally more offense equals longer innings, more pitching changes, and longer games. It will be interesting to see if the mandatory three batter minimum/end of inning limit for relief pitching ends up making the games longer or shorter.

MLB supposedly wanted more offense in baseball, hence the DL and juiced up balls. However, as you state, high-scoring games take longer. People who complained that baseball games are too long did not get their wish as baseball became more slugging-oriented. The problem with more scoring is that baseball does not have a clock. You can have high-scoring NFL and NBA games because there is a time limit on the game. More runs scored = longer baseball games.

Bottom line (IMO): rule changes do not attract new fans, and serve only to piss off fans who already liked baseball the way it was.

That is great news! I trust the mlb, like the nfl or nba, eventually go bankrupt.

Every time the rule committee prepares to vote, the entire committee should have to do 3 things:

1. Remember that at the heart of the matter, baseball well played should be the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

2. Listen to the James Earl Jones speech toward the end of “Field of Dreams”

3. Listen to Bob Newhart’s skit about a phone call between Abner Doubleday and an executive from a game company who wanted to improve the rules.

Then consider the proposed changes and vote accordingly.

Except it’s no longer Even an intentional walk. They just wave their arms and a runner walks from the dugout over to first.

I’ve never liked the designated hitter rule.

Originally, the designated hitter intended to give aging players, who might not run or field as well as they used to, an opportunity to extend their careers in a hitting-only capacity.

I never understood this to be the case.

It was because pitchers suck at hitting.

Actually, it benefits the visiting team who gets to bat with a runner on Second in the top of the 10th.

Batting in the bottom half is ALWAYS an advantage for the home team. No change.

So, NL pitchers don’t suck at hitting as bad as AL pitchers?

These all add up to making the game longer.

Don't forget pitchers and batters taking a twenty second stroll between pitches.

That’s why in Soccer you get 3 points for a win, and only 1 point for a tie.

So 3 ties = 1 win. That gives a lot of incentive not to play for a tie, since you’ll drop 2 points.

The DH ruling doesn't bother me too much, and this is coming from someone who have been primarily following the NL since the mid 60s.

The extra innings rule (runner on 2nd) is horse poop.

The NHL should have the following system:

3 Points - Regulation Win
2 Points - Overtime Win
1 Point - Overtime Loss
0 Points - Regulation Loss

I could even make it more interesting and not even give the point if you lose in overtime, but still use overtime losses as a potential tie-breaker.
