The new Hong Kong National Security Law which is long on generalities and short on specifics. One of the main focuses is “foreign influence.”

Article 38 of the law says that it applies to everyone in the entire world.

Several western countries are warning their citizens on either not traveling to Hong Kong or if they are they then stay away from the police or demonstrations. You could be accused of probably violating the security law, arrested, and sent to China for trial.

When Canada arrested that Huawei executive China retaliated by arresting at least a couple of businessmen. They are still in jail. The Chinese are in a rage to have these foreigners sailing in their “home waters” keeping them open for international navigation. They will detain US citizens as revenge.

Many Americans, including those who have family or business in China, will suffer normalcy bias. They will continue to travel there because nothing has happened to them in the past.

China takes hostages. They took the Canadian businessmen to trade them for the CEO of Huawei. It was inconceivable to them that the prime minister could not simply order her release. The two Canadians have been sentenced to death. Eventually, China will execute them to prove they mean business and then arrest a bunch more and also condemn them. The same will happen to Americans.

Traveling to China at this time is like playing Russian Roulette.

This is basically lobbing a grenade at FDI in China. They are letting American businessmen know that if they are detained, don’t expect consular staff to be able to do anything for them. This is also a broader signal to all business types who do business in China. If the strongest power on earth can’t protect its citizens in China, what hope does any of the other countries have vis-a-vis its citizens?
