She confirmed Kavanaugh and will stop Dems from packing the courts. That is a good enough reason to keep her around.

Smart politics: If she was pressured to vote for ACB then she would have lost her seat, and Mitch saw that.
So, after Mitch counted the votes he realized they could afford her to vote against and ACB would still be seated.
Mitch decided she could vote against so the repubs can keep the seat red.

At first, I read the headline as the Dem called Collins to have Collins concede. Ha ha.

A concession call is customary and Collins is hitting the 50% threshold that obviates a run-off election. They wouldn’t have just handed the seat to her.
That is almost certainly the practical politics that went down on this.
We sent her money, but it was because it was so important to win the Senate.
You go to war with the army you have, not the army you may want.
The time to oust her was in the primaries.

I wasn't happy she voted against ACB, but unlike the vast majority of FReepers, I was FAR happier with her speech about Barrett than her speech about Kavanaugh.
She voted against Barrett because she thinks Barrett will be too conservative on the court and will vote pro-life. That's GOOD news for us.
But she voted FOR Kavanaugh because she was convinced Kav is NOT too conservative and that he WILL uphold Roe v. Wade. If she is correct, that is BAD news for us. Yet Collins gave a pro-abortion speech applauding the President for appointing someone she believes will be pro-abortion, and many FReepers cheered her on because she voted the "right" way in the end.
I'd rather see her voting the wrong way for the right reasons, than see her voting the right way for the wrong reasons.
I don’t get how the Republicans keep losing Maine. Best I can think of is it is a state that is very poor with a large % of the white population on some sort of govt assistance.
They vote Dem mostly to keep that going. I think Steve Bannon has the secret sauce for future GOP victories - ditch the corporate ass kissing the GOP does - instead tax corporations up the wazoo and help mom and pop businesses and the poor while doing a nationalist border policy.

In this case, that’s Collins.
Or to put it another way; I’d rather have someone in the Senate who will vote for my side of the issues 2/3 of the time than someone who will vote with the other team 90% of the time.
We need to stop ceding whole sections of the country to the other side and start running electable candidates in places like New England, New York and California. That means we have to stop expecting every Republican to be hard right. It’s starting to look like we dodged a bullet in the Senate this year. That isn’t going to last unless we start competing in places we have largely given up on.
