Queen Elizabeth II's jubilee message includes a request that her daughter-in-law, Camilla, be named Queen Consort when Prince Charles ascends to the throne.
"And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service," the queen said in a message released Saturday night, hours before she marks 70 years on the British throne.
A spokesman for Charles and Camilla said the Prince of Wales will be issuing a statement of congratulation to the Queen on Sunday, Accession Day. "He and the Duchess of Cornwall are touched and honored by Her Majesty's words," a spokesman said.
The 1,000-year tradition dictates that the king's wife becomes a queen as a Queen Consort, which has no constitutional authority, according to BBC News. But when Prince Charles and Camilla married in 2005, Clarence House said Camilla's title would be "Princess Consort" when Charles becomes king.
It was believed the move was made out of respect for Charles' first wife, Diana. In a historic move, Charles and Diana were allowed to divorce in 1992, and then she died in a car accident in August 1997.
Camilla, who is also divorced from her first husband, was given the title Duchess of Cornwall when she and Charles married, since Diana had been styled as Diana, Princess of Wales.
Charles and Camilla, who first dated in the 1970s before they were married, had carried on a long affair before he and Diana divorced, and Camilla was blamed by the British public for their divorce.

I hope you don’t get all of your history from television.
Damn me, if this isn’t a truly important development.
Charles was doing his military service thing; and, she couldn't wait and married someone else. When Charles returned, they began a love affair that lasted for years.
Diana had the right pedigree; daughter of an Earl (who was a longtime friend of the Queen) and she was young and attractive. She was perfect, except to Charles who couldn't give up Camilla.
It seems that a better way forward should have been found and a young girl (19 when they wed) would not have had her life ruined by a cold, unfaithful husband.
William seems to be a good prospect for the future; and, Katherine seems to be very good "Queen" material. This family may last on the throne longer than I had anticipated. Thank goodness William is the next in line, not Harry.
Pray for the queen to live for another 20 years. I think she knows Charles is an absolute putz and would make a horrible king. She would have abdicated years ago if not. She’s hoping he and his family just dies off so someone else can take over. I’m sure she is not in favor of queen merkle.
I did say “usually”-and Elizabeth and William were a rare exception-especially at that time-but at least neither of them was a commoner-so it was just a matter of Phillip/his family not having as much influence/political clout as some other noble guy-if he had been less than noble I would bet that history would have been different...
Is her ex-husband dead? Alive at 82, eight years old than Camila. They have two children. He dated Princess Anne before Camila.
Brigadier Andrew Henry Parker Bowles OBE (born 27 December 1939) is a retired British Army officer. He is the former husband of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
Phillips uncle was Constantine I was the King of Greece, Philip’s maternal grandfather, Prince Louis of Battenberg, was German so right after WWII, Phillip was viewed with suspicion. His family lost Greece during the Greco-Turkish War.
Because he dithered with Camilla, she got tired of waiting and married somebody else and made babies in the 1970’s.
In the 80’s Diana was chosen as broodmare whose sole purpose was to make an heir and a spare because Charles was getting long in the tooth.
Fast forward another decade Camilla gets divorced and takes up with Charles again. Diana, who now knows why Charles was such a cold fish, gets her divorce, but tragically dies because her driver was drunk.
Bottom line is Charles wrecked a few lives because he’s a not very smart fop in a position of privilege.
I’m wondering how many of the people commenting on this here are actually Brits.
Seems to me that it’s none of Americans’ business. The UK has it’s own way of doing things, developed over many centuries.
Some useless trivia
Musician Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, Eric Clapton, etc.) is 6 degrees separated from Queen Elizabeth.
Steve Winwood’s daughter, Mary-Clare Winwood is married to Ben Elliot. Ben Elliot is Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s nephew. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall is married to Charles, Prince of Wales, who is the Queen’s son.
Camilla was not a virgin and was not of high enough birth. Charles was told that she wasn't suitable.
I think MM told Harry something to the effect of ‘you are only a plane ride away from being King’ - insinuating that if Prince William and Princess Katherine and family were killed in a plane crash, Harry would be King and MM would be...Queen.
But that Bulimic was?
Which Greco-Turkish War are you talking about?
In the one fought 1919-1922 the Greeks couldn’t keep the Ottoman territory given to them by the Allies. They didn’t lose mainland Greece.

It sounds like Camilla is a wonderful grandmother.
He’ll be king for 5 minutes....
Yes. She was. And Dianas GGrandmother was not the Kings mistress but Camillas was. Look up Alice Keppel.
They need to bring back Henry VIII of the Tudors. Let’s see some ACTION! :/
Naw...When she can’t perform her duties...she will step aside. She has been ill a few times this year. She has been a wonderful Queen. I was 8. The big thing I remember was that the crown was so heavy....almost 5 lbs. So put a 5 lb bag of sugar on your head to get the idea.
I wonder what a wonderful grandmother Diana would’ve been....had she not been....destroyed.
