Senators Manchin and Sinema Just Killed Democrat Hopes of Codifying Roe v. Wade
Townhall ^ | 05/04/2022 | Spencer Brown

This week, Democrat Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona dashed the hopes of their more radical colleagues amid renewed calls to pass a federal law that would overrule state limits or prohibitions on abortion.

Calls for slim Democrat majorities in the House and Senate to quickly advance a bill, the inaccurate and grossly named "Women's Health Protection Act," that would codify Roe v. Wade's concocted right to abortion were swift. Almost a little too swift, perhaps, in the wake of an unprecedented leak from the Supreme Court that showed a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito overturning Roe.

The bill was already passed by Speaker Pelosi's Democrat caucus in the House of Representatives, but in order to get the legislation past the Senate and on to President Biden's desk for signature, the bill would need to garner 60 votes in order to move the bill to a final vote, something that's just not going to happen with the current 50-50 split.

So, again, norm-shattering Dems called for the termination of the legislative filibuster requiring 60 votes to move bills ahead for a vote so they could force the Women's Health Protection Act through. But again, Senators Manchin and Sinema aren't having it.

In a statement released and tweeted by Senator Sinema, she restated her position that a "woman's healthcare choices should be between her, her family, and her doctor," but explained why she won't nuke the filibuster in order to pass a shortsighted Democrat bill.

Statement on Draft Supreme Court Opinion pic.twitter.com/3GYIF3YnM7— Kyrsten Sinema (@SenatorSinema) May 3, 2022

"Protections in the Senate safeguarding against the erosion of women's access to health care have been used half-a-dozen times in the past ten years, and are more important now than ever," Sinema's statement explained in her defense of the legislative filibuster. Without it, a future slim Republican majority could advance pretty much anything they want, including federal restrictions on abortion.

Sinema has staunchly defended the procedural hurdle amid crushing pressure from her own side of the aisle — and calls for violence against her from former Democrat officials — to join them in ending its protection against slim majorities being able to ram through whatever legislation they want. So too, has Senator Manchin.

His response to questions about joining radical Democrats to end the legislative filibuster was predictable and in-line with his previous defense of its preservation:

So, Democrat hopes both for smashing the legislative filibuster and codifying Roe v. Wade are more or less done for. The midterms are just over six months away, the Senate is nearing the cutoff point before lawmaking slows for campaigning to take place, and there's more than a good chance Democrats won't be in control when the new Congress in sworn in. Will these realities stop Democrats and President Biden from shaking their fists and throwing tantrums? Probably not. But for now, attempts to codify Roe and a Democrat-invented right to abortion have been stopped.

It is not "healthcare" to kill a baby. That is Orwellian speak. And it is not women's healthcare to kill the the youngest women of all. That is murder.

The reason for that is because many if not most on FR are critical thinkers and more informed about the complexities of issues.

HA! Like the Grifter Pundit and other conspiracy websites?

Is there a "silver lining" with the entire shutdown of America for a strong flu that killed off thousands of small businesses and more so jobs?

The shutdown happened under Trump.

Is there a "silver lining" in Biteme/handlers nation-killing destructive immigration policy?

Yes. If the Democrats end up cutting their own throats with that move. The GOP has a 59%-38% lead among Hispanics right now in the Congressional ballot.

Is there a "silver lining" in Biteme/handlers reversal of being energy independent back to energy dependent of foreign oil?

Yes, the silver lining is it forces us to use the courts to block them from doing so, so that we learn how to use the processes that the left used during the Trump years.

You key into the big problem....the Constitution only gives you a limited number of rights.

You don’t have a right to a driver’s license....that comes from your state constitution. You have no right for beer or alcohol, that also only comes from your state rights.

The issue for the Democrats...they’ve reached a level where any change to the Constitution would be nearly impossible to achieve. So I only see this maneuvering to a state by state discussion.

The sad thing is that this mid-term ought to be about the economy, and this really screws over the top topic list.

If they want to burn down the Supreme Courthouse... I’ll give them a lighter.

January 6th would be the greatest call to arms because these new protesters wouldn’t get an hour in jail.

I don’t think most of the dem politicians actually care that much about Roe. They just don’t want to lose one of their reliable scare tactics they use every election cycle. If abortion is decided on the state level, they won’t be able to use the possible loss of Roe to scare women into voting for them in federal elections, especially the presidential election.

Huh? I thought we were talking about Free Republic posters.

"The shutdown happened under Trump."

Wrong. The Municipalities and State Governors shut down America. Trump admitted he didn't have the power. The panic of Local Government put everyone indoors.

"Yes. If the Democrats end up cutting their own throats with that move. The GOP has a 59%-38% lead among Hispanics right now in the Congressional ballot."

I'll give you that one "if" as you say it occurs.

"Yes, the silver lining is it forces us to use the courts to block them from doing so, so that we learn how to use the processes that the left used during the Trump years."

And what do we do right now about the job and livelihood killing high fuel costs are causing? There is no end in sight. Sure you know how long Court cases take, even if you can a less than socialist judge.

80% of the federal government is involved in what is a state’s rights issue.

Those are the sites that the people that I am talking about post here.

Wrong. The Municipalities and State Governors shut down America. Trump admitted he didn't have the power. The panic of Local Government put everyone indoors.

The vast majority of shut downs happened under Trump's watch. That's just a fact. You were the one that brought up "business killing shutdowns." If Trump didn't have the power, then neither does Xiden. So either way, you took that talking point off the table.

I'll give you that one "if" as you say it occurs.

It already happened in Florida. It's the only reason for the swing in Miami-Dade.

And what do we do right now about the job and livelihood killing high fuel costs are causing? There is no end in sight. Sure you know how long Court cases take, even if you can a less than socialist judge.

You adapt and overcome. Silver lining doesn't mean that there isn't a storm. It means that there is hope in the storm. Too many surrender monkeys here want to focus only on the storm and never adapt and overcome. Lazy, coward, and defeatist are words that are too kind to describe that mentality.

Ageed, but at least the perpetrators are on record for all to see.

"The vast majority of shut downs happened under Trump's watch."

Will you please stop? EVERYONE knows it was the States' Governors and Local governments that shut down the country. Trump did not use some magical Fedgov power in the Oval Office to shut down the Nation, and Biteme doesn't have the power either, of which you are correct.

"You adapt and overcome. Silver lining doesn't mean that there isn't a storm. It means that there is hope in the storm. Too many surrender monkeys here want to focus only on the storm and never adapt and overcome. Lazy, coward, and defeatist are words that are too kind to describe that mentality."

Like I said, I enjoy your optimism. Yes, there are defeatists who are ready to crawl under their beds and suck their thumbs. There are also those who see the Cloud and willing to fight for that "silver lining". "Hope" is not an option for a "silver lining".

Governor DeSantis of Florida is leading that fight. He was also one of the Governors who didn't shut down his state. Your Governor Abbott is doing some good things also. I have fought for my Republic's principles most of my life and I will continue as I decide which part of the Cloud to concentrate my efforts. Best wishes, TexasGurl24.

“The filibuster is the protection of democracy,” Manchin tells me
Dude, the filibuster is a protection AGAINST democracy.

(As is the Senate itself and the Electoral College and federalism generally.)
