Return of Crimea to Ukraine a requirement of international law: Turkish president

Ankara supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and rejects the illegal annexation of Crimea, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

"The return of Crimea to Ukraine, of which it is an inseparable part, is essentially a requirement of international law," Erdogan said in a video message to the Second Crimea Platform Summit.

The Crimea Platform is an international coordination mechanism of Ukraine to draw more global attention to Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Erdogan said Ankara will continue to support the Crimean Platform that was established to resolve the Crimean issue through peaceful means.

"Türkiye does not recognize the annexation of Crimea and has been openly stating since the first day that this step is illegitimate and illegal. This is a principled stance that has not only legal but also moral foundations," he said.

The president added that protecting Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and political unity is "critical" not only for regional but also for global security and stability.

"Ensuring the safety and well-being of our Crimean Tatar compatriots is also among Türkiye's priorities," he said.

Putin's appearance on Russian TV today is another clue as to why Erdogan is no longer afraid of Putin.

Is it not being afraid of Putin, or proactively preventing the Kurdish Homeland movement from gaining any more traction internationally?

There’s a lot of self interest in Turkey advocating for international law to maintain the sanctity of international borders.

Turkey/Erdogan = flip-flop pragmatist tossed in the wind. This is the same Erdogan who has actively blocked Ukraine being admitted to NATO...Who has played nice with Putin for quite a while now...(conflict of interest as a member nation of NATO?)

Turkey controls whether Russian warships can transit from the Mediterranean into the Black Sea. Russia’s easiest move here is to either buy their way past Turkey, which is in terrible economic condition, or create political chaos in Turkey. Posit for a moment that the Turkish president dies. There would probably be turmoil exacerbated by Russia. In the confusion Russia could move something like twenty-plus warships into the Black Sea. This might be enough to tip the military balance as those ships have been loitering in the area of the straits since the conflict began, just waiting for something to happen so they can move in.

Turkey may be playing with fire.

Sorry Turkey, Russia is NOT going to hand you the Black Sea. You’ll have to fight them for it, if you want it that bad.

Turkey is playing both sides here. Notice they haven’t invited NATO warships into the Black Sea.

Returning Crimea to Ukraine is good.

Next, let's return Ukraine, Europe and most importantly the good old USA, from the Liberal World Order and to the people of those countries.

No matter who replaces Putin, the Russian position on Crimea will not change. Crimea is part of Russia now. A plebiscite in Crimea resulted in 85% of the residents favoring reunification with Russia.

Hilarious.

Russia purchased Crimea from the Ottoman Empire.

Since, they have buried a million soldiers there.

And stupid people think it can be taken from them.

I kind of like Erdogan.

Last week, his boys were telling Finland and Sweden "not so fast!" about pulling up a chair to the NATO table.

They still gotta cough up their Kurd terrorists [Finn/Swede legislators & citizens] to the tender mercies of the Turkish torturers, first.

Hi Marcus.

Allow me a question.

Do you know how many times the Crimea has changed hands in the last 300 years?

5.56mm
