So the General SVR take for the past 3 months on this has been that Xi has been telling Putin to show battlefield success quickly or to make concessions to end the war and Putin said that he would only discuss the concessions in a personal meeting with Xi. So we’ll see what happens next week. Especially since Putin’s winter offensive failed.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Saturday indicated that lifting all anti-Russia sanctions and canceling all claims against Moscow in international judicial instances should be an intrinsic part of a peace settlement in Ukraine.

And people in Hell want ice water!

Just electing Trudeau says a lot about their ability to reason coherently

so we should look at the US the same way because you elected Biden?

I think this is an example of Putin trying to make the rest of the world match the voices in his head. The Russian army is not doing well and there is a great deal of bad news around for Putin. The one thing that probably makes him feel better is to jerk people around so that he can get nice juicy soundbites that will fit his narrative and, hopefully, distract from all that bad news.

It is what it is, defeat his butt.

The United States DID NOT elect Biden, and everyone here (maybe with some Ukraine Cheerleader exceptions) knows just that.

removing the sanctions will be the last step of the peace process and it won’t happen at all until the last invading Russian soldier leaves Ukraine

Magic 8 Ball reading.

It is a brightish spot. Putin is offering the possibility of a trade. It is not significant in itself yet because he is still not willing to give up anything but he is feeling a tad nervous now, I expect.

Lifting of sanctions can occur, but, Russia must pull out of Ukraine unconditionally and return all prisoners (including the abducted children) and pay for reparations of Ukraine. Simple enough.

Why don't you and the rest of your neocon buddies rush in and grab your seat at the negotiation table or your words are hollow.

I think the Russian plan is/was to present Bakhmut as a Stalingrad like defeat for Ukraine and use that to bully them into another Minsk deal style frozen conflict. Russia has the rotating chair of the security council next month. So the timing is perfect for the usual Bolshevik gaslighting and the Kremlin’s useful idiots will be lined up to support whatever Putin does. Maybe invite the pope to NYC for a “peace conference”, etc.

NATO analysis suggests that Russia can keep up the pace of military action in the Ukraine for at least 2 years based simply on their reserves.

They are in the process of mobilizing so that may be conservative.

Modern warfare burns through smart weapons that are difficult to replace in any militarily significant time frame at a rapid burn rate. NATO, including the US, are burning through our stock piles of advanced smart weapons at a stunning rate in our effort to prop up the Ukrainian resistance and keep them from being over run by the Russians. America alone has blown through 25-30% of it's war reserve stock piles of Javelin and Stinger missiles as well as a similar amount of artillery munitions.

These burn rates are unsustainable and due to budgetary constraints, supply chain issues, parts and materials shortages, covid driven labor shortages, energy shortages, and destruction of military/industrial manufacturing base it is becoming very difficult for NATO to replenish these expensive and difficult to manufacture munitions in both the critical short term and also in the longer term.

The Ukraine will face serious challenges as NATO is forced to withdraw the blank check Ukraine has been given - both in the form of billions in direct financial support and in the form of gift in kind of the advanced munitions that have been pretty much the only thing keeping the Ukraine in the fight.

There is a very real chance that neither NATO nor the Ukraine will be in a strong position to dictate terms to Russia - short of direct NATO intervention or a massive increase in supply of of already critically depleted NATO war reserves.
