Can Trump win over the GOP as the ‘moderate’ in the race?
New York Post ^ | April 21, 2023 6:25pm | Rich Lowry

Posted on 04/22/2023 10:23:40 AM PDT by TBP

Perhaps the most moderate candidate in the field as of this moment is Donald Trump.

If you want a Republican who won’t cut spending or start foreign wars, Trump is still your man.

Added to this now is clearly a discomfort with the fight over abortion in the post-Roe environment.

Trump’s main line of attack against Ron DeSantis is from the left.

He’s hitting the Florida governor hard for his past support for reining in Social Security and Medicare.

He’s also called the governor’s culture-war clash with Disney “so unnecessary” and “a political stunt,” while not entering the fray in the conservative war with Bud Light.

Of course, Trump’s personal power is such that he’s made loyalty to himself the standard for being considered right-wing — orthodox conservatives who reject Trump are more apt to be labeled moderates than Trump himself.

“Trump needs to stop attacking DeSantis. He comes across as weak, and a bully.”

He won’t stop because he’s incapable of comprehending what you’re saying.

The capital “protest?” Is that what you mean?

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/05/us/portland-protests-100-nights/index.html

Language matters.

Politicians, social activists and the media try to manipulate folks by using words and their emotional association.

If Portland, where they sprayed graffiti on the walls, lit tires in the streets, declared an autonomous zone, and lit federal court houses on fire were “protests,” then let's stick with that term for the capital/6 January which was mostly nonviolent and most the folks entering the capital did no damage.

The term “insurrection” or “riot” is a pejorative/negative.

The term “protest” or “demonstration” is a neutral.

That said, 6 January is a political purge.

That sort of thing happens all the time in the dirty world of politics. It has been done all through history, from Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstag_fire or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Purge to Asia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Revolution Or the Middle East: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLUktJbp2Ug (you need to watch that, classic!)

***Do you realize that Biden with one swoop eliminated 3 major grass roots organizations leaders? The Proud Boys, Oath Takers and one more were decapitated using the DOJ. These are folks which would have caused for continued trouble. At the same time, those questioning the election outcome were de-legitimized in the eyes of the public. Finally, the supporters of Trump, or just those that question the elections (not necessarily the same), were intimidated. The FBI in an unprecedented move (but which was not a media story) decided to interview even those people that did not enter the capital (i.e. broke no laws). How do you think most people react when they are interviewed and get subtle threats thrown their way by an FBI agent?***

These protesters were persecuted, not prosecuted. It was a political purge no different than what Stalin, Mao, Adolf, or Saddam did. Thankfully, in the US, we still do not execute people on the spot as in some other places. We do have no kidding “political prisoners,” but we don't just shoot and bury them in hidden mass graves as elsewhere. But we do use the force of the intel service and law enforcement to consolidate power. The DOJ is led by political appointees! Guess who they are in reality loyal too? Guess what they try to use the agency they lead for?

Quite the opposite is the case. If Trump is elected, and if any of these folks are still in prison, there should be a neutral/independent review of those folks. The ones that have any sort of criminal record should also receive a review. Do not expect spineless Republicans to back their grass root supporters like the Democrats: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-minneapolis-police-biden-bail/biden-staff-donate-to-group-that-pays-bail-in-riot-torn-minneapolis-idUSKBN2360SZ

Actually, your post is BS.

No. Actually you don't know what you're talking about.

DeSantis said, "I could be somebody like Paul Ryan".

link

Paul Ryan said that DeSantis is on his short list for the nomination.

link

Paul Ryan is board member of Fox, a "news" network that wants to make Trump "a nonperson".

link

Paul Ryan said that Trump will not win the nomination.

link

It's as I said.

That’s BS… DeSantis should have stayed in his lane, and his idiot supporters should have counseled him to focus on being Governor of Florida.

Take the facts and paint them anyway you want.

I presented four facts. I can give you a lot more.

Folks will decide for themselves. Period.

DJT will win the nomination only to have the general election taken from him once again.

Agreed. I lean DeSantis, but even he will lose/be cheated, and by an even bigger margin than Trump. Every other R candidate will be a mild speed bump to the demoncrapic ballot printing machine's victory.

Too bad the print factories don't end up the same as those food, chicken, and cow farms.

Rich Lowry is striking out here.

Rich Lowry has been the archetypal "well mannered" "conservative" squish for as long as he's been in the public eye.  He's always ready to make some sort of principled conservative argument that is acceptable in polite society, so long as no one ever actually tries to implement anything in practice.  And for Rich, it's always better to lose gracefully than win with a little dirt under his nails.

The rest of your post is spot on.  Trump isn't essential because of some cult of personality, or any other irrelevant distraction that the "respectable" pols and media want to float.  He's essential because he's the only major public figure who is, and has been willing to call out our excrable ruline elites in general, and the clubby uniparty in particular, and then actually try to implement the policies that his base has been demanding for decades.

Trump doesn't care if he wins ugly, as long as he wins.  And that's why the base still backs him.

The primay season has a lot of good fun left in it, and we'll have more threads like this, but it's not really relevant.  Trump's got the nom sewn up, all he has to do is stay healthy and stay interested.  The real question, which no one seems to have an answer to, is can the massive fraud of universal mail-in ballots, ballot harvesting, and media (including social media) collusion be overcome, now that actual state power has been brought fully to bear on any who would oppose the ruling party.  The Arizona governor's race proved that there is currently no organization, certainly not the Republican party establisment, that even wants to try to counter that morass of corruption.  Tha'ts where the battle's going to be fought with ballots, perhaps for the last time.

Trump doesn’t win, though, unless Hillary is on the ballot. Sadly for Trump that won’t be happening in 2024.
