While US celebrates its independence, Hawaiians still want theirs
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Jul 4, 2023 | Christine Hitt

On the day celebrating the American colonies’ separation from Great Britain, Hawaii is relatively quiet in contrast to the continental United States, where fireworks light up neighborhoods across the country.

In Hawaii, July 4 is not a joyous occasion for some residents. This is because July 4 is also the day a group of businessmen self-declared the Islands to be the Republic of Hawaii in 1894, before imprisoning Queen Liliuokalani. Later, July 4, 1960, was chosen as the day the 50th star was added to the U.S. flag.

Great. Who needs them? Grant statehood to Midway or Guam or Siapan.

It had to do with Sea Power and the need for Hawaii as a fuel depot and major permanent military base. The US Navy determined that it was critically important. The airplanes back then couldn’t fly from SFO to the Far East nonstop either. That’s why we had bases at Midway and Wake as well. Gas stations. When my Destroyer relocated from Yokosuka to Dago in 1970 we had to fuel at Okinawa, Midway and Pearl. The ships just didn’t have the range

Hawaii will sink just like Guam and California, from left wing policies.

Why did we treat Hawaii different than The Philippines?

Last I checked the Philippines are still a US ally.

Legally, under the insular cases, the Philippines were an unincorporated possession, owned by the United States, but not part of the US. It’s people were nationals of the US, but not citizens.

Hawaii was annexed by the US under the Newlands Resolution at the request of the government of the Republic of Hawaii. From annexation, Hawaii has been an incorporated, organized territory of the United States, and its people were American citizens. It was treated no differently than Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, or the Indian Territory.

Hawaii had as much chance of choosing independence as Oklahoma did. The people pushing it today are a radical and delusional fringe group.

Contamination of poliovirus vaccines with simian virus 40 (1955-1963) and subsequent cancer rates

Yup. It didn't kill me. I detected the tumor in late July 1985. Surgically removed August 6, 1985. 3000 RADs of radiation as follow up treatment. Lab histology reported a pure seminoma...malignant. Removed before metastasis.

There would be constant border wars. If the two or more continental nations didn’t start them outsiders would! Look at the history of England, Scotland & Ireland. Look at Russia & Ukraine now!

A very ahistorical relationship. Canada and the US a special case.

I will vote FOR Hawaiian independence ANY TIME they ask for it!

You can have your two Democrat U.S. Senators and your one Democrat U.S. Congressperson back ANY TIME you want!

Just about anything is possible!

Look at the history of the South American nation-states. Both Bolivar and Martin tried to keep them together as federated republic. They failed and these culturally similar nations fought each other off and on for another 150 years. European nations and us dabbled in their internal politics, exploited their weaknesses and exploited their resources. That’s your model not US & Canada! That’s a special and unusual situation in the history of nations.
