While US celebrates its independence, Hawaiians still want theirs
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Jul 4, 2023 | Christine Hitt

On the day celebrating the American colonies’ separation from Great Britain, Hawaii is relatively quiet in contrast to the continental United States, where fireworks light up neighborhoods across the country.

In Hawaii, July 4 is not a joyous occasion for some residents. This is because July 4 is also the day a group of businessmen self-declared the Islands to be the Republic of Hawaii in 1894, before imprisoning Queen Liliuokalani. Later, July 4, 1960, was chosen as the day the 50th star was added to the U.S. flag.

“July 4th is a painful reminder of the aloha aina warriors who are no longer with us, and a disgrace to our ancestors and the descendants of Hawaiian nationals who fought to resist american occupation,” John Garcia, minister of foreign affairs and second vice president for the independently formed government Nation of Hawaii, told SFGATE in an email.

Heck of an article for the Fourth of July

And still an overwhelming percentage of Native Hawaiian’s voted for Statehood, so there’s that.

Sure, NOW they want independence. When it was be a state, or be gobbled up by Japan, or China or whoever... they chose being a state.

The Hawaiians are entirely too butthurt, just like liberals all over the use. To hell with them.

I agree. Hawaii never should have been a state, they should be independent.

Yes, Senator “Believe All Women” Hirono.

Well, except those nine women who accused Daniel “In No Way”, of sexual abuse.

We could still have had our naval bases there with an Independent Kingdom of Hawaii.

Should have made them independent when we made The Philippines independent.

Big power geopolitics did not change with the advent of western democracies. No doubt if not ever made part of the United States Hawaii could easily have been made a colony of any great Asian power at any time. Hawii has the unfortunate circumstance of being rather small and could never be “idendent” for long once the world became more interconnected.

Why did we treat Hawaii different than The Phillipines?

Last I checked the Phillipines are still a US ally.

” Later, July 4, 1960, was chosen as the day the 50th star was added to the U.S. flag.”

Don’t know how long it’s been the law, but stars are only added to the flag on July 4. That’s why we had one year with a 49-star flag—Hawaii got statehood after July 4, 1959.

Does the Bishop Museum still display the pottery decorated with human teeth as ‘a painful reminder of the aloha aina warriors who are no longer with us’?

Hawaii wasn’t a State when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.

I’m good with 49 States. That means fewer wackos in the Congress and Senate.

Fun fact: Hawaiian statehood was delayed 6 months after Alaska because of racial concerns - which still mattered in the US Senate.
