Hawaii had distinct borders, language and culture. They were not culturally “American”, at the time.

At the very least, if not independent, they should have been a Commonwealth, like Puerto Rico.

Yes. Hawaii is a strategic location. Some large power is going to own it whether the indigenous Hawaiians like it or not. We even allow them to have their racist “Hawaiians only” islands.

I have wondered why Alaska and Hawaii became States. They are not geographically connected to any other state.

We couldn’t those areas have remained American possessions are territories longer term?

Why did Alaska and Hawaii become states and why are some talking about statehood for Puerto Rico?

But nobody ever talks about statehood for Guam , the Virgin Islands, American Samoa or other offshore American possessions.

Some wanted us to make The Philippines a state.

Have you checked what the population of the Philippines is today?

You mean we can’t have military bases in other independent countries, and Treaties to protect them?

On January 2, 1959 my grandpa took me to buy a 49 star flag.

I still have it.

According to polls, Native Hawaiians want independence provided, of course, that U.S. continues to protect them from invasion and continues to send them money.

But, polls of all Hawaiians indicate no. We’re happy being part of U.S.

https://www.grassrootinstitute.org/2014/06/star-advertiser-poll-indicates-a-lack-of-enthusiasm-for-a-native-hawaiian-nation/

The people of Hawaii are mostly Asian or European or a mix. Less than 10 percent of Hawaii are Native Hawaiians.

When my dad was stationed there in the 70s, and we lived on base, almost all of my elementary school teachers were of Japanese heritage.

I think also, seeing what happened in Cuba, made people real anxious to bring in Hawaii, so that a similar revolution wouldn’t happen there.

Give them independence. Restore the monarchy. Make Hawaii the hub of Polynesia. France gives up all islands except Tahiti.

Hawaiians in the continental US returns to the islands where they inherit the property of dead haloes.

It would be a good way to turn Hawaii red for one election(’24). The follow-through would take time.

“Last I checked the Phillipines are still a US ally.”

Well, yes, semi-sort of.

The Phillipines have a naturallly strong sense of nationalism and with it some antagonism toward the United States, due to the long and blood war it took to subdue the Phillipines after the Spanish were thrown out. The war was not against loyalists to Spain but organized Filipinos who had hoped to make an independent democratic republic after the Spanish were gone. The U.S. could have assisted in that instead of desiring to make the Philippines a subdued colony, and the residual antagonism of some to the United States would likely not exist today, as Filiponos generally love everything else about the U.S. Filipino Americans make up the 2nd largest demographic group among Asian-Americans, constituting about 20% of all Asian-Americans - exceeded only by Chinese-Americans.

So why don’t you just go back to being a useless Pacific island chain that never amounted to anything worthwhile? Bye bye!

I have no personal experience with Hawaii but from what I have read and heard, its very expensive, with distrustful people who don't like westerners and I would wish them their damn independence and stop takin our tax money....

close their borders....

and goodbye to tourism....

I say we turn Harwaii into a great big wind and solar farm and transfer all of the energy here by container ship.
