.....just a suggestion, but each county could create an “augmenting” force for the county sheriff. It would be volunteers only, would have the power to arrest people, would go through recurring (forever) training, would have a fairly strict criteria on hiring.
In our county of under 100,000, such “patrols” would greatly assist the cops and improve their morale. Volunteers would use their own cars and the county would provide gasoline.
Yes, there are a thousand other important details but we are headed there whether we like it or not. Cops have just become too expensive for most counties. And, I’m speaking of more than just money.
There will still be federal police of course.
I live in a small farm town equidistant berween two small cities. We shuttered our PD and contracted with the sherriff’s department and it’s been fine. Crime has actually gone down as a peculiar effect of the housing crisis driving rents up. Riff raff can’t afford to live here anymore, we don’t have homeless because there are no begging or shoplifting opportunities. There are too many retirees, dogs and guns for porch pirating, plus cameras and motion activated security lights make night time pilfering high risk compared to the denser cities to the north and south of us.
Our state has open school districts so our schools stay full with out of district kids because our schools have better than average test scores. The commuter kids keep our funding up while not increasing our property taxes so that’s sweet.
The only rub is being a red county in a blue state.
You give up too easy
It’s only a trap if you’re speeding.

Seems many towns will start hiring illegals as cops. You voted in Marxist Dems, now live with them.
This is an example of why the Founding Fathers decided that firearm ownership MUST be a Right, not just a favor from a bunch of thieving, pedophile politicians.
So maybe the void will (and should) be replaced by armed citizen patrols and militia. Could turn out to be a good thing (try that in a small town, indeed).
While watching the 1883 TV series, I was amused at how quickly (and how finally/permanently) law-breakers were dealt with. Perhaps it’s time to revisit our nation’s past re: that. The pendulum needs to swing way back the other way... and I think it will.
“Where there is a county elected sheriff, the town police are redundant and probably superfluous.”
county sheriffs do not have law enforcement responsibility for incorporated cities and townships ... however, such cities and townships can obtain law enforcement services from the county sheriff by specifically contracting with the sheriff for such services by paying a very hefty fee to cover the cost of such services ...
>>The Return of the Sheriff’s Posse.... I can’t wait.!!
The Goodhue County Sherriff has a Mounted Posse.
We simply didn’t need them, and the idea of pissing away taxpayer money on useless employees just didn’t make any sense.
Sometime back in the early nought’s, there was a big to-do about some town, I think it was in Wyoming, that had to get rid of their police department. Every story about it was accompanied by dire predictions and “poor helpless townspeople”.
Then it actually happened, and the articles disappeared.
Roughly one year later, someone on a forum I was on mentioned that they live in that area. I asked for his view of what happened after the local police disbanded. According to him, there was a brief period where crooks thought they could get away with everything.
It only took about a week for them to realize, police hadn’t been protecting their victims from the crooks. They had been protecting the crooks from their victims!!!
It turns out, having the police to rely on actually makes law-abiding citizens LESS inclined to use deadly force! Now that the police were gone, every crime became punishable by death.
According to this person, by the end of the third week, any criminally-inclined person who survived was either moving out, or was following the law.
I admit, this is my memory of a conversation that took place more than 10 years ago, and I have no proof the person who told me this actually lived where he said he did. Therefore, I wouldn’t exactly call this reliable testimony. But, it will be very interesting to see if the results are the same in other towns!
Is that why things are running so smoothly in places with a high burden of government, such as deep blue cities?
It would appear the design is to use the weaponized FBI for local pilice matters. Of course only when doing so serves the interests of the Deep State. But without any local cops to get in the way, the finally “The Standing Army” can finally be deployed.
Meanwhile in Canada, the federal government has decided to remove the RCMP from civic policing within the next decade, leaving a huge hole in policing for close to 3/4 of the towns and cities in the country.
