Maine Senator King's proposal aims to ban certain kinds of guns, limit bullet capacity (upon inspection, almost all guns could be banned)

It’s been just over a month since 18 Mainers lost their lives in a mass shooting in Lewiston.

Now, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) says he is putting forward new legislation designed to help curb mass killings without hindering Americans who own a firearm for self-defense or the marksmen who head to the shooting range or the woods during hunting season.

King says the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act would regulate the sale, transfer, and manufacture of gas-operated semi-automatic guns.

Also read: Tragedy in Maine: Who are the victims of the Lewiston mass shooting? He is proposing to limit the number of bullets certain guns can hold. The GOSAFE Act would see rifles and shotguns restricted to 10 rounds or less, and handguns to 15 rounds or less.

“For years, I have said that rather than using the appearance of these guns to restrict them, we should instead focus on how these weapons actually work and the features that make them especially dangerous,” said Senator King. “The Gas-Operated Semiautomatic Firearm Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act addresses the lethal capacity weapons like the one used in Lewiston and most of the deadliest mass shootings across the country. Nothing can bring back the lives of our family and friends, but responsible actions moving forward can reduce the likelihood of such a nightmare happening again in Maine or anywhere else.” The bill, he says, has been in the works for years and would also require magazines to be permanently fixed.

Bump stocks would also been banned.

I read the actual Bill. I believe this an effective ban on almost all firearms.

I’d call it a springing ban. That is, the bill has language that basically defines a gas-operated firearm to captures almost every such firearm. Further, the “banned” list isn’t in existence; it WILL “spring” forth later, as defined by the BATFE.

Here is the actual bill:

https://www.heinrich.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/gosafe_bill_text.pdf

‘‘(40) The term ‘gas-operated’, with respect to a semi-automatic firearm, means any firearm that harnesses or traps a portion of the high-pressure gas from a fired cartridge to cycle the action using—

‘‘(A) a long stroke piston, where gas is vented from the barrel to a piston that is mechanically fixed to the bolt group and moves to cycle the action;

‘‘(B) a short stroke piston, where gas is vented from the barrel to a piston that moves separately from the bolt group so that the energy is imparted through a gas piston to cycle the action;

‘‘(C) a system that traps and vents gas from ei ther the barrel or the chamber to directly strike or impinge the bolt, bolt carrier, or slide assembly, to unlock and cycle the action;

‘‘(D) a hybrid system that combines elements of a system described in subparagraph (C) with a sys tem described in subparagraph (A) or (B) to capture gas vented from the barrel to cycle the action;

‘‘(E) a blowback-operated system that directly utilizes the expanding gases of the ignited propellant powder acting on the cartridge case to drive the breechblock or breech bolt rearward; or

‘‘(F) a recoil-operated system that utilizes the recoil force to unlock the breech bolt and then to complete the cycle of extracting, ejecting, and re- loading.

In addition….

‘‘(v)(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2) or (4), it shall be unlawful for any person to import, sell, manu- facture, transfer, receive, or possess, in or affecting inter- state or foreign commerce, a firearm, device, or combina- tion of parts described in subparagraphs (A) through (H), knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that—

‘‘(A) the firearm is included on the list of pro- hibited gas-operated semi-automatic firearms de- scribed in section 935(a);

Skip down further….

‘935‘(a) DETERMINATION OF PROHIBITED FIREARMS.— For purposes of carrying out section 922(v), not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this section, the Attorney General, acting through the Director of the Bu- reau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, shall publish, and update, a list of gas-operated semi-automatic firearms in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce that are subject to the prohibition in section 922(v).

Put it all together, and basically if passed virtually every gun that uses gas to cycle could be banned by the BATFE.

They like to hunt in mostly rural Maine. And Portland daily becomes crime ridden with imported up the interstate gangers.

This is grandstanding by ole Angus.. the jackass caucasser.

And of course would not solve the problem of what this clown and clowns did. Always the case- make others pay.

Leftist governments have killed more of their own citizens in the last 100 years than people killed by guns by criminals. Perhaps he should introduce a bill that would ban leftist politicians.

At 80 years old, I intend to be retired and enjoying what’s left of my life.

This POS, at 80 years old, is determined to shove his tyranny down our throats.

I barely trust anyone who voluntarily involves himself in politics; it’s a game for power-hungry control freaks. At his age? Away with them!

Maybe I just lack imagination but I find it hard to imagine how a firearm in my possession could effect interstate or foreign commerce.

Socialism will brook no challenges to its authority. But I am not a lawyer. After all the USSC found that a farmer growing corn on his own land and feeding it to his own livestock was effecting interstate commerce almost 90 years ago.

Socialist will brook no challenges to its authority.

Next time Freepers demand that Susan Collins be tarred and feathered they should look at Maine's three Congresscreatures who call themselves Rats and recognize that she's a blessing compared to the rest of what Maine regurgitates and sends to DC.

People like this senator like nothing better than imposing their will on others.

There is also no greater drug than having the rich and powerful seek you out to ask a favor.

These types rarely retire for any other reason than being defeated or the prospect of being indicted.

It's not the gun or how it works, any weapon in the hands of a madman is a danger to all
Any gun in the hands of a good man is only a danger to the madman.
